Opinions on Herringbone Sport Coat

Good evening gentlemen. I just picked this up on sale for $80 from Lands End. It's heavier and wool. What do you all think of the fit and the patch pockets? I've never worn a coat with patch pockets and I think they're making the coat look boxy. I know it's more casual and that's the look I'm going for.

Herringbone is eternal.  To me it has the same casual, quasi-rustic look of corduroy and is as versatile.  Dressed up with bow tie and flannels or down with Levi's and boots, it works either way.  From that small photo it seems to fit you so I would call it a good buy.

I have a very similar jacket to that and as the poster above says, they are a timeless and versatile winter staple.

Regarding your concern over the pockets, it seems to be a common trend to have them patch and flap pockets on herringbone jackets which might contribute to the boxy look, or at least the bulk at hip level. I had the flaps on mine removed for a slightly more sleek silhouette, so you might consider that.

The coat looks fine on you in my opinion not at all boxy despite the pockets.

Flapped patch pockets will draw attention to the hips and below. No way to avoid that. From that small photo, the coat looks good on you. Great coat for knocking about in cool weather.

Interesting, I wouldn't have thought to do that. Good to know it can be done, thanks for the tip!

I'd prefer without the pocket as well, it's in great form nonetheless.

Looks good, but unbutton the bottom button, kthxbi. biggrin.gif

I see nothing wrong with the coat, other than the huge pockets.

Please undo the buttons, I rarely button the buttons when I'm wearing tweeds, unless it's very very cold.

Unless wearing a vest beneath, tailored undercoats look better buttoned than unbuttoned. DB undercoats should always be buttoned.

Agree that it is better not to button the bottom button if the coat was cut so as not to button at the bottom.

Thanks for your input everyone. I don't know why I had buttoned the bottom facepalm.gif Trust me I know better than that.

I actually like the coat

Here's mine, sans pocket flaps. Interesting to see how this photo would be scored on Vox's country vs city scale on the harmony thread!

Nice!  Great tie and those matching socks show true wit.  Well done, that man.  Uh, do you normally have so much break in your trousers?
