I am surprised that nobody has suggested rosÃ© wines. I think that most red wines would combine badly with the kind of sauce that you seem to suggest. A chilly rosÃ© wine would probably be my choice. It also goes well with the idea of BBQ and summer evenings.
A lot of people tend to look down on rosÃ© wines, but they are great for many occasions and, actually, tend to be my choice for the daily dinner at home during summer.
Actually, in La Rioja (which outside Spain is mostly known for the red wines), people drink a lot of a kind of local rosÃ© wine they refer to as "clarete" or "claro". However, you almost never see it outside La Rioja.
