Here I'm referring exclusively to comments on a specific item of clothing that you're wearing ("I really like your tie", "love the pocket square", etc.). Often some disparaged item will be defended by its owner by saying that it gets complimented all the time. I'm starting to realize that at least as often as not, if you get complimented on one item of clothing that you're wearing, it's a bad sign. It means that item stands apart from the rest of what you're wearing, and has become conspicuous in a way that you and your overall impression are then not.
When I see a really great fit, I almost never think, "fantastic tie" although it might occur to me after a few minutes. I just think "great fit" as when I look at a great piece of art I first wonder at its beauty, and perhaps afterwards attempt to break it into its constituent parts to investigate what makes it so beautiful. Thoughts? Is getting a compliment on a particular item always grounds for reconsideration of that day's attire?
