How do you casually wear a bow tie?

Thread Starter

Hi, I've been thinking lately about how to casually wear a bow tie. I don't mean as casual as a t-shirt and jeans, but in less formal situations like birthday parties, going to nice bars and things like that.

Can this be done?

What kind of bow ties are usually worn casually?

What are they usually worn with?

Can the simple black bow tie be worn casually?

Googling "Casual bow tie" brings up a ton of pics you can get some inspiration from.

Traditional bow ties (butterfly) in solid red or black are the formal kind you should try to not wear casually...they can work, but everybody associates them with a tux/suit usually.

For the type of bow tie, I'm a big fan of diamond tip bow ties. They're not as formal and 'neat' as a traditional bow tie, which leads to it feeling more casual. At the same time, it's still a bow tie, so you can dress it up also. I've always worn my bow ties with a button down collar shirt (mainly gitman vintage or wings+horns) and a cardigan or sweater (vneck or a button down like a SNS stark). The diamond tip bow tie also almost always comes as a self tie...meaning you have to learn how to tie a bow tie, which I think every man should know how to do (as with neck ties). Also look for fun patterns instead of solids if you plan on wearing casual. The safe ones that you can dress up/down are polka dots, stripes, plaid.

Only do it if other people are also wearing ties, preferably also bow ties.

You don't.  A solid colour bow tie should only be worn with formal rig, black tie or white tie or as part of Mess Dress or as part of a corporate uniform.  Other than that it looks extremely affected as part of a fashion-forward youth look or the university don look. Don't do it. It never looks good outside of formal evneing wear or mess dress.

lol you wear it by leaving it untied and dangling around your collar, then again thats not really wearing it but having it as an accessory

Leave your erect penis out of your pants and tie it around that. It tells the world that you have a certain joie de vivre teacha.gif
