Navy Travel Blazer - Zegna vs Samuelsohn

I am looking to add a "classic" navy blazer to my wardrobe and am willing to spend a few bucks on a good one.  The first choice is the Zegna 10-pocket travel blazer.

http://store.zegna.com/item/store/ermenegildozegna/tskay/C0CCACDC/cod10/41230538VT

It is priced around $2000, but have seen it for about $1800 at Harry Rosen's, Toronto.

But, I have been interested in Samuelsohn too.  They have a travel blazer with fabric from Loro Piana for about $1000.

Does anyone have an opinion on either?  Has anyone had any luck buying Zegna on eBay?  I am leery of fakes.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Both should be good quality. The real factor to consider is how each model fits on you.

Do you need a travel line jacket? The features are nice if you're traveling. On that jacket the pockets, the half lining the blend .

But likely for the same money you can get a Milano line jacket. Unless you need the features I'd personally lean towards the Milano line.

I actually saw a Samuelsohn navy travel blazer for $600 at the Bay; not Loro Piana fabric though.

I have some Zegna stuff (2 suits and a couple of pullovers) and it's good but whether it's worth the cash is debatable. The fabric is top quality but you can buy good quality cloth from lots of sources anyway and if you get yourself a good taylor you'll save cash, not to mention get exactly what you want, rather than buying an item and being dictated to by the manufacturer.

Just out of interest what would you wear with a navy blazer? I've been thinking of having a new suit tailored and am considering navy but may opt for a more bluer cloth depending how my nerves hold out and what the tailor has.

This was the sort of look that I am going for...

I agree the fit is the most important. I like the look of the Zegna better, but have had a hard time finding any pictures of the Samuelsohn.

Which one fits you better?

I haven't been able to try either yet.  I don't live in a shopping mecca.  Samuelsohn is a special order from a local menswear store.  Nearest Zegna is eight hours away.

Though I'm liking the 2nd link, taxgenius does have a point. It is all about the fit.

Is the Samuelsohn MTM? I'm not too sure about the cloth on that Zegna. I think the quality will be similar, but I would give the edge to the Samuelsohn. Their stuff is really well built.

But it appears you like the cut/style of the Zegna. If so, and Samuelsohn does not have a style you like, then I would keep looking. For $2k you have a lot of options. If you don't find anything you like better, get the Zegna.

You can also check out the Belvest "Jacket in a box" navy blazer, if you can find it. I just missed out one on sale frown.gif

Is there a reason for Zegna wool blazers to be priced at $2000 and beyond? Historically, has that been the price bracket? The fabric is possibly the best I have seen but the price is stratospheric. They also tend to fit me very well for the RTW--unfortunately for my pocket!

I would go for Zegna but do note that the fabric while superb is frail for everyday wear.

People are willing to pay it. The ones linked are mainline and over all not that expensive in the Zegna line up. Cashmere for example would be a step up in price. So would the Couture line. Couture cashmere a couple of steps.

If you're buying these you aren't wearing it every day. But the one in the first link is a wool, cotton and silk blend. Hardly likely to be frail.

If Zegnas fit you well you might be able to save a wee bit of cash by looking at Canali and Corneliani. For a fabric of equal quality they are usually about $300-$500 less than Zegna. They might lag behind Zegna's cuts by a year to two - but thats not always so bad either.

I was just thinking about all those pockets in the 'travel blazer'......riddle me this..........assuming a good snug and tailored fit on the jacket........which I presume is the goal with a Zegna..........what is one going to put in those pockets that isn't going to totally screw up the fit? On my most tailored jackets even a slim phone causes slight buldges.

I guess the pockets on the inside of the jacket skirt might be semi functional.

Am I missing something here?
