Earrings:  hip or not-so-hip

Alright, well I'm finally getting pushed from the nest, and the one thing I always promised I'd do is get earrings. All the girls I talk to say I should definitely do it, and no, it's not just to appease me, because then they'd say, "um yeah, that sounds like a good idea." Anyway, before I get a sharp (I hope) metallic object rammed through my ear, I was wondering what some opinions are from stylish guys.

Earrings are fine if you're a woman or a trashy rockstar, I guess you are neither so I wouldn't even contemplate the idea again if I were you.

First of all, earrings? Two or more? Definitely not. Coming from another person in your age group (that is unless your parents are kicking you out after 35 years on the basement couch), I don't think earrings have been 'cool' since I was in elementary and middle school. IMHO, earrings represent the antithesis of style. When I picture guys with 2 earrings, I usually think of those guys who shave all their body hair, wear sheer clothing, and go to tanning salons -- all in the hopes of attracting women, or so they say at least. Integral parts of this uniform are, of course, 2 fake diamond studs. I'll admit that one hoop in one ear isn't as bad. But still, to me anyway, earrings are in bad taste. Also, unless you work (or plan to work) at a fast food place or record store, you'll want to take it/them out because they aren't professional-looking at all.

In this instance I'll be frank rather than polite:  earrings, cologne, jewelry, and overly plucked eyebrows do nothing to enhance a man.  These all fall into the category of misplaced attention and effort.

There is a very good article in either Details or GQ (I think the former) about Harrison Ford's earring that explains more eloquently than I can why you shouldn't do it. Unless you are a pirate. In which case, also get a parrot.

I think a single stud or small hoop can look good if you are an athletic, African-American male (think Michael Jordan) who does not work in an office setting.  Otherwise, not a good idea.

I think Ed Bradley of 60 Minutes looks ridiculous with his, but then again, that's probably because he's 70-something. Personally I think they are out of style. Back in the '80s, when I was in HS, a lot of guys had them, including myself. But it was edgy then, now it just seems boring.

there is no reason whatsoever to adorn yourself with jewelry.

it is the feminine spirit which seeks attention. as a man you should be more concerned with who and what you give attention to, rather than trying to recieve it.

btw, big shiny watches fall into this same category.

never- i also went for "no"- forget it, no earrings for the gentleman...well but if youre still not convinced and should get some you could still say that the chinese nobles (of course before the fall of the mandschu-dynasty) also wore them... btw-DandySF: ah- eau de cologne doesnt "enhance" the man?-what are you using? eau de parfum?(eau de toilette?) eg aqua di parma is only available as eau de cologne (so is trumpers extract of limes- and many english products from eg penhaligon`s)

First, if you're going to disregard the unanimous opinion on this forum, DO NOT GET YOUR EARS PIERCED WITH A GUN. These things were made for half-wits who get 5 minutes of training in the mall and proceed to mutilate ears with the dull punch. The guns are impossible to sterilize completely, impossible to 'aim' precisely, and just a huge scar on the body modification community. Go to a place that is going to charge you at least 30 or 35 dollars per ear. Decent jewelry costs at least this much (only get titanium or implant-grade surgical steel to start off with). Also, definitely get both ears done. Just one makes people look kind of silly. If you want to be a little more unique than the average frat guy, consider a dermal punch. The piercer will use a circular blade to actually punch a hole in your ear, removing a circular piece of flesh (which you get to keep and take home). This will allow you to start at a bigger guage right away--without any stretching--and you can opt for a tunnel, shown here, instead of a conventional piece of jewelery. CAUTION: Don't do this if you plan on stretching your lobes further (which would make you waaaaay cooler than the average frat guy). Removing flesh causes the skin to be thinner and much more prone to breaking under the pressure of stretching. If you want to start off with a larger guage right away, but plan on stretching further, get an ear scalpeling done, shown here, where the piercer will use a scalpel to cut a large **** in your ear that can accomodate larger jewelry.

Let's not make it unanimous. I have a pierced ear, and do wear an earring from time to time. I think Ed Bradley looks cool, as does Michael Jordan. The thing with a pierced ear is you don't have to wear it when it's inappropriate, and if it's done well no one will ever see it. And if I did it again today I'd get two...

But then I have tattoos too- where you can't see them. Guess it's the rebellious soul of the artist in me.

Re: tattoos -- so many people have tattoos these days, isn't having one more of a sign of conformity than of rebellion? Discuss amongst yourselves...

Vero, maybe it's the fact that I'm reading this post at 6:45 in the morning, but I take great offense to you telling me to pick better/different friends on the simple fact that they want me to get earrings. These are people that would go to bat for me, and presently are, and I can't imagine you want me to stop hanging out with them because their taste may or may not be conventional.

I know you didn't mean any harm, but those types of opinions should generally be left to better, longer friends, not someone from a Forum that I've never met.
