Where can a noob such as myself go to read up on basic style/wardrobe essentials, what colors to wear based on my skin tone, etc etc.

Style may be something akin to an art, but dressing is not equivalent to style and has much more to do with craft and taste.

Alan Flusser's books are a good starting point.

Color selection is an excellent and often overlooked topic. Finding the right colors to compliment your skin tone is essential to looking your best. The fact is that even the most beautiful fabrics do not always look great on some people because of the color does not flatter their complexion.

I don't know of any one book that is best. There are a lot of them out there but they differ a bit in what they recommend. My advice is to head to a book store and look through several of them until you find one with the best photo references and easy analysis of what your colors should be.

+1 There's a section of matching clothes to skin tone in there somewhere.

Also, for $.99 you can get this: Link

There's also a Styleforum book list on Amazon. I'd post a link but I can't find it...
