Breaking up a glen plaid suit...?

I have a chance to purchase a classic, black and white two button glen plaid. Black buttons.
To me, it seems that the pants could be used with a blazer but I have always been hesitant to do this. For that matter, the jacket could also be used separately especially in that it does not have an additional "highlight" color woven into the fabric. Classic black and white.
What do you think?

The salesman actually recommended it which I thought was odd seeing that most think breaking up a suit is a no-no. Yet, it does seen doable and practical. It seems to me that the younger generation of suit wearers are more open to maximizing their clothing by mixing things up.

I've worn a Glen plaid suit jacket with a pair of odd pants. I was traveling and didn't want to carry two suits. It worked out well, but is not something I do routinely.

Yes to both, but best together.

Sure. If it's a B&W glen plaid with no overcheck, the pants will look great with a blue blazer or a black jacket. Versatile pants: the solely BW makes them formal, the check allows them to look easygoing.

Traditionalists would frown on wearing a B&W glen plaid with no overcheck as an odd jacket. According to 1930s style, it's a pattern for city suits or formalwear. In today's world, though, I doubt that it matters much.

If I liked the fit and silhouette, I'd buy it just to have the option of wearing it as a suit or the pants with a blazer.

P. S. A salesperson who actually knows something about classic style! Hurrah!

Why break it up? The pieces rarely look right without one another.

its completely fine just get them both dry cleaned at the same time to maintain the same color for when you wear them together

I just bought a three piece glenn plaid and think I'll mostly wear them as separates.

I think it all depends upon the size/scale of the pattern and the texture of the material. Some Glen Plaids will always look like a suit cloth while others won't. So, I can't answer the question without seeing the fabric.
