Adjusting length of a tie

I am short (5 feet 2 inches) in height. Recenttly I have bought a tie which, if tied properly, has its narrow end hanging below the wider end. How can this be adjusted?

You've a couple of choices -- you could use a knot that uses more of the tie (e.g. a double four-in-hand), or you could send it to someone like Tie Crafters and see if they can alter the length for you.

At your height, any tie, properly tied, will have that issue. I occasionally have it, and I've got 4 inches on you. Either buy kid's ties or hack off the end.

You may also want to look at vintage ties- they were made shorter way back when.

Instead of altering, can I fold the narrow end back & then tie all three layers with a tie-clip as shown in the figure?

Just tuck the narrow end into your trousers along with your shirt. It'll also keep the tie in place. This doesn't have to be complicated.

Like many things in life, it would be a shortcut and a hack, one that neither does its job well nor satisfactorily, and quite obvious to outside observers that you skimped on it.

I do not keep track of my tie every second of the day, immaterial of whether or not I wear a tie clip. Sometimes, it just moves sideways, revealing the shorter blade. Sometimes, I may need to adjust my knot before a meeting or presentation. Other times, I may decide to take off my tie at a restaurant, in front of other people.

Anyway, the point is, unless you're absolutely certain that you would be keeping your tie tucked away at all times, this is not something I would recommend. I would consider it awkward and unbecoming -- however, it is entirely your call.

That said, have you considered looking at tie makers such as Sam Hober? David makes custom bespoke ties, and if you find a pattern that you like, you could ask him to make it shorter than the standard 57".

It poses the risk of revealing the narrower end it the tie moves sideways.
