Between Timex Weekenders, Seiko sport watches, Parnis white dials, and Sea-Gull you can easily get something that will do a great job without breaking the bank.  You can also do some ebay browsing on vintage watches where sometimes you can find a great deal.

Buying something to impress anybody is definitely the wrong reason to do it.

A Rolex tells people that you don't know too much about watches but are easily subjected to marketing.

A true connesour's watch will be lost on anyone but the elitist of women--who are not going to hanging out in your local dive bars unless they are slumming and then they will stay away from you as they are probably trying to get away from their social circle.

My recommendation is to find a watch you like and find a woman who likes you for who you are.

Is it the finest watch produced? Of course not. But Rolex builds a damn fine watch in the price range with excellent build quality, a decent in house movement, excellent after sale service, and outstanding resale value at any time in almost any country in the world.

buy something that you want, who cares what the girl thinks. A $$ watch maybe good to get you in the front door, but sir you need to do the rest.

Having a collection of Audemars Piguet, Patek, FP Journe, A. Lange & Sohne, I find myself yearning for a Rolex. Never a Rolex fan to begin with your exact sentiments, but now, having drawn to the history & superb manufacturing techniques, it is one of the most misunderstood company by so-called WIS.

The short answer, no. You don't need a nice watch to impress the ladies. Your self confidence, charm, wit and personality should be good enough.

Agreed. My two main watches are a vintage Omega Seamaster Deville from the mid 1960s and a Helson Skin Diver, a tribute watch to the Blancpain 50 Fathoms.
