Your Personal Sense of Style

I felt this didn't belong in the Noob thread because of the nature of the discussion.

What is your sense of style, and how did you develop it? I'm a young college age guy trying to understand what works and what doesn't. Or is it simpler than just abiding by a few rules?

I just wanted higher quality and better fitting basics than what i was accustomed to receiving from places like JCrew and the Gap

Un-deadpooling thread.

I read the link, but didn't really get much of anything information-wise. Is it possible that we should just buy the basics and then go on from there? Like mix it up with sportscoats, etc...

Synthese did the master post on this but I can't find it right now so I'll just say

you develop a sense of style by developing yourself as a person

not so much finding your identity (because, to quote Zadie Smith, that's "the easy way out")

but just getting a sense of what appeals to you outside of the massive fashion hype machine

If you're in college then you probably don't have a lot of money and it doesn't really matter how you dress anyway

Spend your money on concerts, books, skate decks, oil paints, etc. Not clothes.

How you look - your style - is more a factor of your body, personality, and the way you move than it is about clothes

Don't pay attention to GQ, Esquire, or any of that bullshit

This forum can be great to bounce ideas off of, or to ask for criticism, especially if you have a sense of humility,

But don't pay too much attention to us either
