RM Williams Balmoral fit tight everywhere but my heel.

I bought a pair of these in an 8H from Nungar after getting sized up and trying on almost every style of RM Williams boots in Canberra. The Balmoral fit the best and suited my tastes with the zip side. They didn't have the Balmoral in stock so used a Craftsman to size me up as they share the same shape.

When trying on boots a 7.5H fit me so my heel didn't move, but it didn't bend at the widest part and was a bit too tight on my toes. The 8G cut circulation from my toes and the 8.5G had my heel floating. The SA said that ergonomically the 8H was the best fit for my foot but my heel was not sitting tight in the heel cup, so there was concern that the stiffer Balmoral boot might have the same trouble.

After a few months of wearing them, they fit tight across my forefoot and bend at the ball of my foot so they fit properly there, but my heel slips (1/4 inch) when I walk in them. I tried a suede heel grip in them and it just rubbed like crazy so I took it out almost immediately. I'm not sure what else to try or whether I just don't have the feet for RM Williams boots. I was considering an inner sole, but I really like the "dry feet"feeling of the leather sole and don't want to compromise that.

I really need to make these boots work for me as it took me a year to finally find a good quality boot with a zip side that (almost) fits my foot.

A heel cushion might help. It will take up some of that slippage.

Get a vegetable tanned leather insole.

Thanks, I might investigate that this weekend.

Thanks for the tip, I'll be on the lookout for some of those to try. Hopefully they won't take up too much room up the front of the boot as things are already a bit tight up there. I reckon an insole that stops just behind the ball of my foot would be a good compromise.

I've also discovered tongue pads in my morning search, might give them a try as well :)

I mentioned in the other monster thread how I came to find my cure.

Problem: RMW Craftsman fitted perfectly, except the heel slipped. Any size smaller was too tight, due to wide forefeet but narrow ankles. I tried everything. Quarter sized footbeds were not enough, and full sized simply crushed my toes.

Solution: Had a pair of Danner Orthotic (quarter) insoles. These are made from very hard, indestructible plastic. They have quite a bit of give and flex. Then used a contact adhesive to glue a blue Orthaheel Regular, 3/4 (Product ID, 21RE12) on top of this. I used X-Large, UK 11 - 12.5 Orthaheel for my size 12 RM's. Don't get the wrong idea. The Danner has hardly any height to it, but curves up and around the edges. This cup like effect receives the Orthaheel perfectly. In fact, the top edge of the Danner ends up at the same height as the Orthaheel. A podiatrist might shake his head in horror, but it works for me, might not for you. They've been going for a couple of years now without any separation. No more slippage, and the vamp is nice and tight across the foot.

As I said, this is not like glueing one footbed on top of another. The Danner footbed is like no other. More like a flat, curved bit of solid plastic. You're actually glueing the Orthaheel inside the Danner, not on top of it.

Hope that helps
