Entertainment in NY

I posted this in Entertainment and Culture with no luck. Probably the wrong forum and since I don't know the right one, I will post it here.

I have searched SF and the net for information on cabaret rooms in New York and have found very little. Can anyone recommend a good cabaret venue? Trying to avoid the usual tourist traps (Feinstein's?) and find out where the locals go in Manhattan.

Do you mean a strip club or the more traditional cabaret type thing?

At the high end: Cafe Carlyle
At the middle: Algonquin Oak Room
At the lower end: Smoke

Not a fan of dinner and music though.

More traditional. Cabaret, Jazz, that sort of thing.

I understand the oak room is closed for renos. I've been to Carlyle, was looking for something similar or at the middle.
