Proper length for a leather jacket

467467 I'm not talking about the uber short jackets that are in style now or motorcycle jackets, but just in terms of classic leather jackets, what is an appropriate length. I just bought a jacket that is about 2.5 " past the end of my belt when wearing jeans, is this appropriate?

Here is the jacket in question, since I snipped off the tags in the excitement of receiving it, I cannot return frown.gif

Also any idea if body length can be shortened by a tailor?

Most tailors wouldn't do leather jackets. The material is much different, you would be looking at shoe repair guys to do any sort of repair.

But 2.5 is fine. The two I have are at 2.5" and 3.5" past my belt (well, with the jeans I'm wearing right now). You're fine.

And I would never recommend altering a leather jacket. They just aren't made for it- let it develop and break in to your body.

The body of your jacket could be shortened by a competant and willing tailor.
Your own body length can be shortened by your local friendly wise guy, serial killer or butcher.
I would advise against the latter.

Any recommendations in the SF Bay Area? It seems to me at least from old photos that classic leather jackets always are about belt level, due to the fact that they must be worn zipped up while the pilot/bike rider is sitting.

It would take a really skilled tailor to alter a leather jacket.

True and the tailor would have to have a heavy duty sewing machine and heavy duty needles,
thread and cutting equipment. Leather tailoring is really specialized work that not many ordinary
alterations tailors would accept.

Any other opinions on my original question, jacket length? I appreciate the input cpjeff, but since we both wear a short I just want to see what other people say

I'd suggest you post a fit pic. Various jackets are designed to fit various ways. I have a few leather jackets and one fits about belt level and one a few inches below that. They both look great - just different.

This just came in the mail today from a fellow sf/thrifter. Brooks Brothers suede in small. It's got...patina. How's the length? I'm waiting for Man of Lint to per-suede me of the correct way to treat this vintage leather jacket.

I've wondered this as well. My girlfriend's parents bought me a leather jacket that might be a little large and therefore a little long in the sleeves (extended length from the shoulders). What are you supposed to do about the length of sleeves on leather jackets if you're too short or too tall?

The body length looks good. It is hard to tell from the picture but it looks like the sleve are too long by an inch maybe 2. Its hard to tell what is going on in the picture.

Looks good on you all around Dig and congratulations.
I would have to see a closeup (Macro is best) of the overall suede and also the patina areas before making any suggestions.
