If all you do are the above, I'd wait for the iPad 3, which should be out in 2 months, and then just bring a bluetooth keyboard with me. For the record, that's what I do now and don't even bother with a laptop any longer.

The thing is the iPad is still limited in what it can do. Personally I wouldn't have an iPad as my principle / only 'computing' device.

Since I have an iMac at home, I have to agree with you on that. I do not think that it would be the perfect option for a sole computer. But, if its max portability with only word processing, video watching, etc. that you need, then the iPad fits the bill.

I'd still hold out for the new models. Or, saving that, switch from Mac alltogether and get one of the new Ultrabooks shown at CES. The new HP model looks pretty sweet.

Use a bluetooth keyboard... Works great and makes for a nice note-taking machine (of course, multi-tasking during class or whatever isn't possible)...

I'd still go with the Air.

I also have the old unibody macbook. I was going to replace a few months ago it but instead upgraded the ram and hard drive and I'll probably keep it for another year. But when I do replace it, I'll definitely get an air unless something completely new appears. The air is perfect for the kind of computing I do - I literally never have a need for anything more powerful or capable. The portability and design just trump the hell out of any other considerations for me.

If you don't know what an i7 or SDXC is, chances are that you do not need it. The Air would be good enough.

2 reasons - you can keep the iPad apart from the keyboard for added portability and/or functionality, and you can travel with it without any of the stupid security bullshit that computers require.

I didn't know you were banging out essay's. I'd still wait for the new models though. The current ones are already starting to get outdated.

thinking about picking up an iPad to replace my mba.

i travel all the fucking time and i hate having to bring my work and personal laptops and scanning them separately.

with an iPad i can just let it go through without taking it out?

I have an air for about a year now and I love it!! Best decision i've ever made, i'll never go back to a heavy laptop again

Yup. Been through with it 4 times and never been asked to take it out. I always ask first though, just in case.

Yeah iPads, tablets and kindles are all fine. 10 trips or so, asked the first time only.

^ I can also confirm this.

Here's how to decide whether you need an Air or a MacBook:

Get a bit of paper and write down each of the ports on the side of your current machine.

For 5 days keep a tally of the ones you use.

If you use a port more than once per week, make sure its on your new machine.
