Gitman Bros Custom Shirting - BEWARE!!

So sometime in Sept-Oct 2011 I went to a Gitman Custom shirting event at an undisclosed location (I am not going to mention the shop name here because the issues has nothing to do with that shop).  I met a representative from Gitman, X, and he took measurements of me. I bought 3 shirts of different patterns and was told that they would arrive by the beginning of November.

I waited. November. I called and was told they would be in soon. December. I called again. New years.

JUST got them today, Jan 12th, after 3 long months of waiting. If I knew that ordering these shirt would take this long, I would have just waited for the end of season sale. (By the way, I saw 2 of my shirts, my size, being discounted at 50% off at Barney's last week). How can Gitman take so long to make 3 shirts? Don't they make thousands of them per season?

So I went back home and tried them on. As far as I know, I am not particularly big or skinny. My fit is quite common (Wings and Horns size L). I had surgery in December and I lost quite a bit of weight. To my surprise, I found the fitting at the shirts too tight at my chest level. When I stand up straight I can see the fabric around the button at my nipple level being stretched very tightly. I remember X taking measurements of only my neck and my arms. He told me that a standard fitting will be scaled according to these measurements. I wear Gitman all the time and I honestly feel they are indeed too tight around my chest. If I tried these cuttings in a store, I would definitely not have purchased them.

To my utter disappointment, I found a manufacturing defect with one of my shirts. One particular shirt has its sleeves openings at the front of the sleeve!

I am completely speechless. (Take a look at the screenshot). Did anyone have a similar experience?

Besides the topic,

I don't think lots of people here will go to buy a Gitman custom shirt. IMHO, buying gitman custom shirt is a silly idea.

That shirt, looking nothing special to me. If W&H size L fits you well, you can just buy it from them. I believe they have better looking and cheaper shirts compare the one you got. There are lots of brands you can try.

Why don't you contact Gitman about it and see what they have to say?

@andrewgreg well for Gitman I have been wearing size L for some season and XL for another. So I thought it would be nice to get something that is actually made to fit me perfectly (apparently not).

I have contacted Gitman. I sent them an email 3 days ago and I will bring back the shirt to complain about this today.

LOL at making a custom shirt just based on neck and arm measurements.  What the hell were they thinking?  I would demand a full refund on all 3 since there is no way they could reasonably assure you a good fit with just that information

Thanks OP. I've been wondering what the Gitman MTM process/finished product is like...

BlackToothedGrin To be honest, I kind of agree with you. Like how custom can you be with just measuring 2 aspects of the body?

I am surprised no one on this forum had a similar experience (I saw a couple of orders at the shop that just came in yesterday as well).

Have had lots of QC issues with non mtm gitman (vintage line). Usually seams aren't even at the hem, button placement a little off etc, definitely not worth it for the money. I get better stuff made in china that is much better quality.

I noticed that this season especially. I only bought one shirt this time season (blackwatch) and when I was at Barneys they had three shirts in my size. I grabbed one and before checking out, my brother noticed the seams were way off at the collar for the one I got. Another had similar issues and a slight fabric irregularity and the one I ended up buying looked ok.

The past season oxford shirts have been fine at least in my experience as well as the flannels.

I normally wear L in Gitman. This year, I realize I need to wear XL. The cutting seems a bit off. Definitely noticed the drop in QC this year.

wow, that is a pretty big mistake. I'm sure they'll take care of it, but the fact that mtm shirts don't fit is definitely not good. Doesn't sound like true mtm if they just take neck and sleeve measurements.

I've had great luck with Gitman. I have 8 of their shirts and only two problems I've seen on my shirts have been one slightly misshapen button (works fine) and one with a single button stitched on upside down...I'm sure I'm the only one who's ever noticed it. Doesn't even bother me enough to fix it. Surprised others have had issues with QC as I just haven't seen that from Gitman at all. I like Gitman because they always seem to deliver a solid shirt in a good fabric for a fair price, but maybe I have just been lucky so far. Also I only paid full price for 4 of my 8 shirts...so maybe they just seem a better value to me for that reason. Still, they are definitely my go-to for a nice basic oxford shirt.

Any good alternatives for Gitman? Miller seems a bit too formal for me.

How did alarms not go off in your mind when they only measured your neck and arms for a mtm shirt?
