Yet another 'what would you wear?' thread ...

Wording on the invitations states:

"Our annual winter gala will be held on Saturday. The theme is 'A black and white affair' (not to be confused with a formal black tie event), and everyone is encouraged to dress up in their best black and white attire. This is not required though, since we just want everyone to come and have a good time."

Seems like they don't want to stipulate a tux so as not to exclude those who don't have one. If I show up in a tux I'll be 'that guy', if I wear black suit, white shirt, black long tie I'll look like Elwood Blues. This is my GF's work party and she only started there a couple of months ago so has no idea what people wore last year.

WWYD?

Do you own a tux or a black suit? Both?

Both, no shortage of suits, shirts, ties in all the staples. Black long ties in satin and grenadine.

While under most circumstances like that I would bring out the dinner jacket, I think this is slightly different.

Since this is a work function AND your GF is new there I would recommend just sticking to the black suit. Maybe a nicely textured black tie and pocket square. Most company functions are not formal enough to be able to pull off the dinner jacket. Plus most people who will be in attendance wouldn't know they should really be wearing a tux anyways.

In short, I think it would be better just to blend in in this situation rather than having her new coworkers wondering who "that guy" is.

There will be no bad comments if you wear a suit, but there is the potential for some if you go black tie.

I agree with the above. I would like to see the black grenadine, sounds nice!

I say go black suit, white shirts, black grenadine tie, and ... not sure what to do for a PS. On one hand something with color might help make it less boring, but cream or white might keep the look monochromatic in a good way.

I was at a wedding once and there was this guy who had on a black suit, white shirt, white ps, and a black and white wedding tie. I think that would suit you well. I happened to catch a picture of him. He was a nice guy, except when he took off his shoes to dance his feet smelled funny.

What if you don't have a black suit? I can't fathom ever wanting or needing one.

If it were me, i'd just wear something very high contrast. Dark navy or midnight suit with white shirt and silver tie.

Hard to go wrong with that.

I bet OP will see a lot of guys in white, rather than black. He'll have to report back.
