Do we have one yet?

I don't think the jacket is much too short (i prefer a shorter jacket...not BBBF short, but shorter than the usual), but the pants are massive and the jacket is at least one size too big.

^^^ I dont know why, but I like the look of an inch too short jacket. I always felt awkward with a jacket going past the crotch area - makes me feel like I am wearing a longcoat. Most seem to like their suit jackets / SC's excessively long though.

You made three mistakes with this suit:

1. You went for 42s, when you shouldve gone with 42R. I am assuming you went with 42S because your sleeves were shorter? You will always have to shorten the sleeves of OTR suits, next time focus on the jacket length instead. 40R will not help you at all, looking at the belly, you wont be able to button a 40, not to mention that 40R would likely be even shorter or equal to your 42 S.

2. Buy suit separates, this way you can get trousers at least a size smaller. Letting pants out at the waist is very easy. Tapering pants right is very very hard.

3. Shouldve gone with black or dark navy. Good colors for interviews and tend to hide small imperfections much better.

And finally, see if you can exchange this suit, you dont have to return it. Get 42R jacket and smaller size pants. I wouldnt trust this tailor to get your jacket or taper your trousers right, if exchange is impossible, so look around your area for a very good tailor. Also, expect to pay at least $50 in alterations.

Hey, if this suit is just for interviews, you're fine.
Normal people don't notice the nuances mentioned on this forum.

The only thing I would do is ask the guy to shorten the pants.
But, even that is normal for real life, so maybe not.

So, just leave it, and focus on your actual work experience.
The suit actually looks great if you're trying to be a "suit"

For your next suit, you can do your homework and get something in a different style/fit.

Oh okay, you should do that. Look for a oxford model, something like this do not to be this brand but the same style would be nice (you can never go wrong with these shoes)

And good luck, hope you get the job :)!

Thanks, yes I've bought these:

I visited the shop again, they are going to make some alterations for me. The next size down was far too restrictive on the shoulders when I moved my arms, they are going to bring the side seams in a bit and take the trousers up another inch. Hopefully be okay after that.

Why? Just so he can be a mindless sheep confirming to an arbitrary nonsensical convention?
Admit it, the unbuttoned bottom button is sloppy and disrupts the symmetry.....

Oh god, here we go again...

And this is why it shouldn't be a hard, fast rule - it's more to do with your height and torso to leg proportions, which aren't the same for everyone. Someone with a short torso probably needs a regular-to-long jacket, while someone with a long torso should probably get a short-to-regular jacket. The idea is for the suit to accentuate your positives and, where reasonable possible, gracefully contribute to correcting your failings.

If a regular or long jacket looks too long on you, then it is what it is. The onnlly caveat being - make sure you're knowledgeable enough to make a good judgement.

Last point, "longs" and "shorts" are generally rebalanced in the design/proportions by the maker - they aren't just "longer" or "shorter". Some makers do this better or worse than others. I've seen some longs that were exaggerated and ridiculous in weird ways while the regular was just fine . As with all things, your mileage may vary - but the idea is that there's enough variance in the real world that you shouldn't consider it an absolute rule in either direction.

Those shoes look much better!

Just be careful with using the roominess of a suit as your gauge of fit. I felt the same way when I got my first couple of suits; but that was because i was equating it with how I like my regular clothes to fit at the same time. So, they ended up being too big. Generally speaking, my suits that fit properly will not be as roomy as my average joe clothes. Good luck.

This sounds good. You'll get a lot of (often dramatic) advice, but in the end you'll have to wear it, and pay for it. No use in sizing down if it makes you uncomfortable and you won't wear it.
