Then what you should REALLY do is take 880 up to 580 over to the 101 and visit wine country. smile.gif

We (my wife and I) enjoy staying or stopping in at the Cyprus Inn in Carmel. They have a very nice courtyard with heat lamps, fireplaces and fountains perfect for a casual lunch or a hearty afternoon tea. You can also eat inside in the bar area. The Cyprus Inn is just 50 yards off the main street (Ocean). http://www.cypress-inn.com/
By the way, the place is totally pet friendly so be prepared to see a lot of dogs. We have stayed there several times and it is a favorite in Carmel. Order the burger for lunch or wait and have afternoon tea in the afternoon (it will really fill you up)

On Ocean is a fun little place for lunch. We like to eat outside in front and watch everyone go by. The place is called Portobello. We enjoy it. http://www.portabellacarmel.com/portabella/ It is right next to a classic old candy store and everyone seems to stop there.

For men's clothing, stop in Khakis at the top of Ocean.

For fun walk to the base of Ocean and hit the beach.

If this is your first time you really should take the 17 Mile drive to get a feel for the area and then explore Carmel.http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=17+mile+drive&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

But please, soon make a point of going to Big Sur and seeing the most amazing coast line anywhere in the world. Stop at Napenthe for lunch or head there if Carmel isn't your thing. http://www.nepenthebigsur.com/

Go to the Acquarium in Monterey. I very much enjoyed it when I was there 25+ years ago.

If you like golf, there's a muni I played a year ago that's not bad. It's called Pacific Grove. An average course but has ocean views which makes it enjoyable and it is cheap. 17 mile drive is exquisite and the ability to walk around Pebble Beach, Spanish Bay, etc. is well worth it. I drove through there and walked onto the 18th green at Pebble Beach, and some other tee boxes without interference. Was quite surreal and beautiful. Very accessible and had Jason Taylor (football player) wave at me for waiting to drive by as he was hitting his shot off a fairway. in other words, you can walk around and do your own tour of Pebble Beach and the surrounding courses without anyone interfering as long as you act the part.

17 mile drive is cool. Great wineries in Carmel Valley (Parsonage, Georis, Bernardus). Walk all over Carmel. Lots to see and shop.

Great restaurants in Carmel and Carmel Valley. Luca, Cafe Rustica, Wickets, Cork Screw, The Mission.

i try to get up to monterey once a year or so. the aquarium is, indeed, great. but if you want real life, take a kayak paddle on the bay. always amazing. and i really love point lobos park just south of carmel highlands. the best food i've had there lately has been at bernardus. cal stamenov is a really great cook. also, north of monterey just off the 101 is moss landing. cool assortment of antique/junk stores. there's a fish market where you can get good lunch.

Bernardus restaurants = Wickets and Marinus.

Wickets = outdoor next to croquette lawn. Mixed grill, laid back, fresh, extremely good. Reasonably priced, but not cheap. Grat outdoor fireplace.

Marinus = high end white table cloth affair. Indoors, beautiful restaurant. Expensive. On lists for top restaurants in Calidornia. Usually near the top.

Bernardus (to their credit) also serves wine from other vineyards in the area and also has one of the most extensive wine lists in the USA (featuring wine from all over the world).

Wills Fargo is their third restaurant and is good, but we prefer a wickets to them all.
