Personally I think criss-cross lacing is fine on a shoe like yours, in brown with lots of broguing. Straight lacing is better for more formal shoes, especially anything in black.

i do one horizontal in the bottom hole and then criss cross the rest of the way up. i also find it allows me to have better control on how tight or loose the shoe fits.
