i only have one GAP merino sweater. from this season. and its a PILLING machine.

no way comparable to Brooks

Does that mean it contains some polyester?

As far as budget sweaters sweaters go (people have mentioned H&M, gap, etc.) I was actually pleasantly surprised with a regular merino vneck I got from Express, a shitty mall store, of all places. I bought it way before I found SF and started learning how shitty mall clothes are etc. but I've had it for about 2 years now and I'd say it's on par with the ones I also have from jcrew. fits better than the ones from jcrew or gap, too. no opinion on H&M since we don't have one.

Every time I think I'm being prudent in a thrift store and saving my dosh, I come home and read a thread like this. I had a heather blue, slim fitting 100% cotton, like new Banana Republic sweater ON MY BODY today then took it off and put it back on the hanger, thinking I probably wouldn't get my $4.98 worth of wear out of it.

As a positioning statement. I'm not a JAB fan and I don't think the vast majority of what they sell is worth a damn. The OP didn't mention (at least in the first post) anything about needing/wanting slim fit. I'm a bigger guy and the slimmer fitting sweaters don't work on my arms at all. I said nothing of fit with regard to the JAB merino sweaters and probably should have mentioned they would be "frumpy" or boxy on a slim person. I was simply saying they aren't bad for $29.99. If the sweater doesn't fit , that's a dealbreaker at $2.99 or $2,999.99.

Here's some measurements and thoughts about a size med. Howard Yount crewneck. Meausrements taken after a day's wearing, which may have stretched it out a bit, but if so, that would make the measurements more realistic:

Chest: 43" right at the armpits,
Back length: 27.75"
Shoulders: 17"
Arm length: 25" (top of the arm) 18.5 (bottom of arm)
Armspan: 65"

I'm usually a 39 coat, between R and L and it fits me pretty much perfectly. It's trim but not tight. If I wanted to fold the sleeve cuffs, the arms'd be an inch short. But for this sweater, I like them flat. The weight is nice, I'd say just a bit lighter than mid-weight. Not a very dense weave, but dense enough. I found it very comfortable during all-day wear w/ just a t-shirt underneath. I'd be tempted to get them in multiple colors. I got the pearl gray and it's really nice, not quite as light as on my monitor, which I like.

I think you made a good decision. I don't like cotton sweaters for some reason. Best to save that $5 for when you see a nice wool sweater at a thrift store imho. Many of my favorite sweaters are from thrift stores. I posted a bunch in the sweater pron thread started by Alan C., I think. Some of the old cashmere, lambswool, etc. sweaters you find at thrift stores are really wonderful.

I not had any problems with pilling, but admittedly all mine are from a few years ago. Since vouchers have stopped, I have not yet shopped at GAP again since I am already saturated with their products!

Bought these. They're just what I needed. Light, warm, conservative and comfortable.
