Aren't the Sandersons by Allen Edmonds?

thanks -- are they marked such, anywhere? Or is this just common knowledge?

Or, better yet, are there a couple telltale details that give it awaY?

Common knowledge, but there are some things like nail/heel pattern, stitching, welt characteristics, number of stitches, etc.

You will never find AE markings on RL branded stuff. RL is very clear about this, both from a branding perspective, and because their commissions are often made to a "higher standard" than the base models the manufacturers offer. This is also the reason AE will not perform restorations or give exchanges/refunds on any RL shoes.

Here's an example of nail/heel ID:

Keep in mind that AE makes RL shoes per RL's quality standards. This can be far and above AE's quality standards for AE shoes.

Well, it can only be as great as the raw materials and the capability of the machines and employees that AE uses.

Im not sure their methodology of creating shoes for RL, but couldn't they order superior raw materials specific for that shoe/RL?

You're forgetting design.  I'm not a fan of the AE longwing (MacNeil), but am thinking about the Sanderson for my next shoe.  Not sure on the technical details, but the Sanderson looks more stylish and less blobby to my eye.

...from a different perspective since I've tried both. I agree that the Sanderson looks more stylish, probably better made based on RL specs and standards, but the MacNeils fits me better...

The Sanderson looks to me, from pictures, to be identical to whatever they're calling the longwing in the independence collection.

You may be right.  Either that or the Player's Shoe, which is a little different in the wingtip design.

It is identical to the AE Williams from the indepedence collection. I own the RL Sanderson and will say the finish is superior to the AE.

I have to say, Sandersons are a tremendous shoe. The stylings on these...well, I can't wear them with everything. However, the build and fit are very good.
