Shoulders Taken In

I was on valetmag.com today, and I came across this article. I wanted to know if it was really true that shoulders can be taken via the back seam. Has anyone ever had this process done before?

The article only says that the shoulders can be taken in *slightly* by using this method. I still would not do it, though, because it only narrows the jacket in the back and not in the front, thus spoiling the symmetry. IMO, shoulder width is the one thing that *must* fit on a RTW suit.

I worked w/ a tailor who insisted she could do it, so I gave it a shot. She did it from the arm holes. It turned out OK, but the amount she was able to narrow the shoulders was minimal, not even an inch total. I like 17-17.5" shoulders w/ a 38-40R coat (I'm a 39R) because I have a skinny neck and buzz-cut so my head looks smallish (though it's not that small), and it's a bear finding coats w/ narrow shoulders. Hell, it's hard to find a decent selection of 38R suits, much less w/ narrow shoulders.

I had shoulders narrowed by opening the back seam, removing and recutting the collar and sewing everything back together. It worked, but I think I got lucky. I wouldn't do it if I could avoid it.
