Fit Critique

First off, I would like to apologize if I somehow missed a dedicated critique thread, but my search didn't turn up any, so here we are. I recently received a 3 button Harris Tweed sport coat from an elderly gentleman. I realize it could use some alterations one the sleeves, but I would appreciate any help you can offer.

Here are a few crappy pictures.

Sleeves are too long. I'd personally have it taken in a bit on the sides, but I prefer slimmer fits.

I'd prefer a slimmer fit as well along the sleeves, down the torso.

sleeves look too big to me, not sure that you can do anything about that though. (along with the torso, as previously commented)

Yes indeed, here we are.
If you would be so kind, would you answer a few questions?
1) What would be the age of this elderly gemtleman?
2) Would this gentleman be, by any chance, related to you?
3) Your own age would be?

Well, thank you kindly, Mr. Lint. Now, down to business.

I am not exactly sure of his age, but he is at least 40 years my senior, with me being the ripe young age of 20. No, he isn't related, but rather a close family friend. He gave the jacket to me when he found out that I was interested in men's clothing. He has in past years grown a little to wide around the middle to fit into it, so he figured I might want it. Now, I realize my skinny little ass might just be the wrong size for it, but I really would like to be able to wear it without looking like a fool, if only for the sentimental value associated with it. I also realize that to get it to fit might be impossible. So I decided to ask the good folks of SF, whom are much more knowledgeable than myself, to give me a hand.

Damn, I probably should have explained that all in the original post.

The thing looks dreadful. It is old fashioned to be kind and does not look right at all, you would be unlikely to see any of your peers in such a garment: Whilst you say it is made from Harris tweed, does it have the proper label because it looks like a cheap cloth? The patch breast pocket is beyond words, it is baggy at the left shoulder (and to a lesser extent at the right) yet pulling at the centre vent.

It really would have been helpful had you taken the trouble to get decent photographs rather than some taken in a mirror though I don't think that would make the thing look or fit any better.

I would suggest that you burn it discreetly, sentiment is no basis to consider dressing yourself..

people have a hard time letting go of ill-fitting suits, why not purchase a new one? it's the new year anyway, a change can do everyone good. sales are everywhere anyway maybe you can even get a good deal on ebay?

+1.. Burn it and with your body type stick to 2 button instead of 3

The shoulders look a bit wide for you, the sleeves look big and im not talking length wise i mean just big for your arm size, im a bit confused by this jacket the front pic shows it to have some waist suppression but the back looks very boxy.

Thank you all for your input. I knew it was a very outdated style, to say the least, but I was still holding on to some glimmer of hope. Ah, well, this one will have to be humanely destroyed, I guess.

The vent splits open.

Thank you for taking the time to clarify.
I would have to agree with the opinions you have received so far. This jacket isn't going to work out for you.
Personally, I would recommend returning it to the gentleman, with thanks but assure him that it will look far better on him than on your ripe young 20 year old skinny little ass.
Lastly, give him another 10 years before even thinking of him as elderly. 60 is an older gent but far from elderly. smile.gif

The chest pocket is on your right side?
