Pocket Square/Tie Fox Football

Why do the guys on Fox football pre-game show coordinate their ties and pocket squares? Who is telling them to do this? Am I the only one who thinks they look like they got their clothes at the mens warehouse? Does anyone else do this ?

Look, it's football, not ballroom dancing. Dressing really nice for the fox football pre-game show will not go over well with their target audience. It'll alienate them.

This isn't the case for soccer. Usually coaches dress quite well with a certain FU character.

You're condescension towards American football and its audience is off-putting. Shannon Sharpe, although not on Fox, is one of the best dressed men on tv, period. Furthermore, if the target audience is ignorant of clothing they will not care whether or not a pocket square/tie combo is kosher.

+1 I'm actually surprised by the amount of them that wear pocket squares at all.

Blame it on the person who dresses them for the broadcast, stylists?

I googled Shannon Sharpe and I get pictures of...

Shannon Sharpe's clothes are from his own closet. Usually the clothes are provided by a sponsor.

Educate me; what's the "correct way" to wear a pocket square?

With pocket squares, the beauty is that there aren't so many fixed rules; you can wear it to match anything in your outfit, from shirt or tie to the socks. The whole point of a pocket square is the interesting interplay between it and the tie, shirt, jacket, and the rest of your outfit, even if it is just to contrast all other colors you are wearing. The match can be achieved either in color, pattern or material.

You can wear pocket square with or without a tie, but when matching it with a tie, never wear the same color and pattern on the pocket square as on the tie. bigstar[1].gif

A white linen or cotton pocket square is the most classic choice which can be combined with any suit or tie, and it is the only one that is worn neatly folded. All other pocket squares, especially the silk ones, should be worn nonchalantly, tucked in your pocket as if you were not trying too much whether it looks good or not on you.

I don't buy that. If anything, their bright color ties and matching squares are some kind of attempt to look fancy. I just think the producers or whomever told them to wear pocketsquares... and the simplest way to tell them how to wear one is to match the tie... so they did. It's quite funny though.

As to the Shannon Sharpe picture, that must be very old because he wears RLPL, Zegna, and Tom Ford/Tom Ford inspired bespoke. They're quite awesome actually.

I'm sure they have a stylist who tells them to do it, but I'm always just impressed that they are wearing pocket squares. Considering how big Howie, Shannon, and Terry are, I would think that part of it is simply to break up the giant mass of blue or grey jacket that would be there by itself if not for the pocket square.

The one that gets me this year is the Fox referee analyst. He kind of looks like some mob lawyer commenting on the games.

At least he keeps his jacket on when they show him. Don't understand why the PBP and color commentators go for the jacketless look...
