Going to Budapest - need tips

This weekend I'm going to Budapest with my girlfriend. We are staying at the Sofitel Budapest and are looking forward to experiencing the city together, neither of us has been there before.

I am looking for some tips and recommendations from those of you aquainted with the city.

Which shops should I seek out? Apart from Vass my knowledge of Hungarian brands is sorely lacking.

What to see?

Where to eat?

What to do?

I would be very grateful for some

There's a preppy place close to VASS. Something like Il divino, Divinus. Fair prices. Excellent food and drinks.

They look like tourist traps, but are surprisingly full of locals: Old Man's Pub and Fat Mo's. They both have restaurant, bar, and dancing areas, with good energetic music. Our waiter the first night at Old Man's essentially picked our dinner for us, and it was outstanding. Big cheese platter, great assorted appetizers (including fried goose liver and 'goose cracklings,' which are essentially pork rinds made out of goose), and the kilo and a half of pig was delicious. The meal kept me full for the whole 5 days... There's a cool strip of bars and cafes just southeast of the market; can't remember the name of the street but you can't miss it. The wine museum in the castle has an all-you-can-drink two hour tasting for 18 euros or so. The labyrinth isn't a labyrinth, but is still worth a visit either after the wine museum or after a few Sures in the Bierstub that's just outside the entrance. Hope this helps, I'd be able to tell you more in a few months. Enjoy the city; I'll be back for my second visit on Sunday. Tom

I've always had a blast in Budapest. I would avoid advice, unless it is incredibly sound, and walk. Walk, brother, walk. There are million great little spots, but finding them on your own is the funnest part. Don't take a taxi. Seriously, those guys can be epic assholes.
