Volunteering

Anyone have any good recommendations or organizations to volunteer with? I can afford to give up a few hours a week but I am not sure where to start. Ideally, I'd like to be volunteering with other people my age (early to mid twenties).

I live in Vancouver so there are quite a few options but most organizations seem to either be looking for people to do free administration work or to volunteer one on one with someone (like big brothers). Neither of these options are really what I want to do. I'd prefer to do something that is a little more social and group focused.

I used to volunteer for a couple of local conservation charities. It was outdoor work, quite physical sometimes, which tended to attract younger volunteers and likeminded people generally. The work was in small teams, so it was sociable: there were often drinks afterwards and an annual party organised. Kept me fit, cheaper than a gym, did some productive work, got me out in the sunshine regularly, met lots of nice people, had a good time.

You should volunteer yourself to an art class specializing in nude portraits. On a completely unrelated note, I plan on moving to BC to finish my residency. Might sign up for a night class or two.

A friend of mine volunteered with an orgainization in Atlanta that was sort of a mix between volunteer opportunities and networking, with a focus on young professionals. She loved it, and I got the impression that it was very similar to what you're seeking. For example, they spent one Saturday morning painting a United Way.

The Atlanta group was called Club Blue, I believe. I don't know if the "Club Blue" name was unique to Atlanta, but, if it was, I would imagine there's a similar group near you.

You've got a huge drug addict population up there. Why not just volunteer with one of those groups? Or someone who works with the resulting homeless population.

I volenteer several times a year at a soup kitchen, that is very satisfying. hightly recomended

That's brilliant because you take directly care of people and you will find the all experience incredibly gratifying.
