What color pants do I wear with a dark blue collared sports shirt?

I'm wearing a dark blue collared sports shirt for evening events, no jacket, and was wondering what the best match is for pants. My wife says charcoal but I was thinking along the lines of a medium, textured gray.

I would appreciate any suggestion or advice. Here's the shirt:

The only evening event I would wear that shirt to is at home on the sofa,
possibly accentuating the shirt with a bowl of popcorn on my lap.
What evening events are you referring to?

I have to agree with your wife. My rule of thumb when pairing different colors is - light on top, dark on bottom.

As for me, when I usually wear dark shirts, I'd pair them with a lighter colored pants. But what kind of evening event are you going to?
