I used to laugh at people wearing trainers with their suits. But after experiencing the same myself with uncomfy dress shoes I get it!

My apologies! It's a figure of speech. You see, here in the U.S. all true gentlemen raise chickens on their estates. The size of one's alpha rooster or cockerel is quite a point of a pride amongst the gentry, which would traditionally result in spirited arguments over whose cockerel was the biggest. Accordingly, whenever men are given to random bouts of braggodocio, we refer to it as a cock measuring contest.

I've got a pair of poorly fitting cole haans with the rubber nike air sole and excellent fitting AE loafers. Fit matters -- I much prefer to walk in the loafers.

Have you considered orthotics? I have an external tibeal torsion that gave me pain for years until I got the good foot doctor to make me a pair. The inserts for the AEs are only half-length, since the loafers don't have a removable insole. Even so, they made a massive difference in comfort. I can walk all day in them. Bit pricey though.
