I'm a proponent of using whether one prefers Alien or Aliens as a sort of litmus test for a person's taste in movies.

i favor aliens. alien was awesome and great, but aliens redefined (and some ways conquered) the science fiction action genre. everything since, with the exception of t2, has been playing catch up.

I'd say The Matrix reset in the action department and not just scifi. Also, I personally can't stand anything James Cameron has ever done.

the matrix was ok... but i think a big testament to how good a film is is how its aged. aliens is still awesome and the matrix is so dated and painful.

Ahh good poast. I can't argue with that, but IMO, Alien was better simply because it was straight up horror, rather than sci-fi action, but yeah, as sci-fic action, it kicks ass.

Alien pretty much makes every top 5 scifi movies list. It's a better movie, though Aliens probably has more memorable lines.

Years ago, I did some animation for Derek Vanlint, the cinematographer of Alien. We were watching the rushes and he leaned over and told me how much he liked the work. Bit of a thrill for my inner nerd.

I was vaguely aware that a "Prometheus" movie was coming out. I had assumed it would be about the figure in Greek mythology. I take it I am mistaken in this.

To me they are both dated. Things get dated. Citizen Kane has been the "Greatest Film of All Time" for decades now. It's dated.

Despite Aliens marginally higher aggregated scores from Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, I'd say that The Matrix has cultural clout where Aliens doesn't. William Gibson and Darren Aronofsky gush about it and it's subtext is infinitely richer than the Aliens films. Also, I frankly don't see how Aliens "redefined" scifi action, but to your credit it's been a while. Can you explain how? The Matrix popularized "bullet time" and the whole slow-mo swirling camera thing. Techniques which have become nearly de rigueur in contemporary action films and that have even been utilized by the occasional drama, comedies, sports events, and commercials. So, if redefining action scifi is your point of differentiation, I fail to see how The Matrix hasn't eclipsed Aliens. I would also guess that the Matrix is generally ranked higher on film/scifi aficionado lists, but upon briefly looking I find that I am wrong in at least 1 or 2 instances.

Also, for clarification, in terms of importance I'd say Alien ranks The Matrix. That said, for my money (and to my memory) The Matrix ranks Aliens, easily. I'll probably give Aliens a watch sometime this week.

Matrix was idiotic. The sci-fi was ridiculous - machines caring for humans to harvest the electricity of their brain waves? That's one of the dumbest premises ever. The action scenes were somewhat revolutionary for a mass-market film, although you could argue The Crow was similar, just on a smaller scale.

I agree with this. Aliens is dated, but Alien still holds up in the same way that Blade Runner does. Don't get me wrong, Aliens is a good, fun movie, but it's not an important movie.

Aliens didn't break any visual ground that wasn't already broken by the first movie. (Okay, putting machine guns on steadicam rigs was pretty cool.) Besides, Alien had this guy as the concept designer.
