So did I just ruin my brand new Alden shell cordovans?

So last weekend I purchased my first pair of Alden shell cordovans (PTB, no. 8).  The next morning I take a no more than 20 minute walk through the streets of Boston.  When I get back, I notice that the front tips of my soles are frayed.  Upon closer inspection, I notice that the soles got soaked just walking around in the damp (not raining!) morning.  Lesson learned - do not wear new leather soles in anything but totally dry weather/indoors.  So stupid.

The question is, what do I do now?  I'm thinking I should take some sand paper and sand the frayed edges smooth and apply edge dressing.  I mean, it looks like my new shoes have a two day beard growth!  Or should I take this to a cobbler?  Am I just obsessing?  This was literally just 20 minutes of walking in the city.  Unreal.

What size they are will play a role here.

It just means you're heavy on your toes when you walk. My shoes do the same thing. Take them to a shoe repairer and have a toe plate put on. Better yet, get it done before the first time you wear a new pair of shoes.

You certainly did not ruin your shoes. Rest easy. Never wear leather soles in wet weather unless they are old beaters you no longer care about. The scuffing on the sole edges is perfectly a normal part of wear. Let them air out and rest for 24 hours minimum. The edging can be touched up later. Again, don't worry as you are going to have those shoes for a long long time to come.

I thought I remember a senior member here (not sure who) say that he doesn't feel like a shoe breaks in until he wears it when it's wet outside. He may have been talking about the leather upper though.

Agree that it looks like normal wear on a leather sole.

I am also heavy on my toe. So after first wear my toe looks the same. But if you keep wearing them toe will reach a stage where it will stay there. Some of my good shoes I just leave them as is. Becos toes needs to get adjusted to your walking style. And once it get a bit curvier(wear out a bit) it just stays like that. TBH i don't see any real damage on the pic.

Regrettably I agreed with the sentiment of the original quote... However since I can't be bothered to edit my earlier +1, I do advocate wearing leather soled shoes in wet weather, just not when they are brand new. They need to be roughed up a little first.
