Thinking of buying an overcoat, is this a good one?

I have been thinking a lot about buying a black overcoat lately.  I usually wear sweaters in darker colors - green, brown, blue, or red - and white dress shirts.  I visited my local Nordstroms and got some sizings and suggestions, but I have a lot of Amazon gift cards from Christmas that I want to use up, so I wanted to buy one on Amazon.  My size is a 38 Regular, so...

The thing is, I feel very sketchy about buying something so expensive online, and I've never heard of Cashmere Boutique before.  I'm also worried that it may not hold up if it's, as it says, 100% pure cashmere.  I think the main problem may be that I just don't know very much about what I'm talking about.

If you're worried about screwing this up, you probably will. I wouldn't spend all your Amazon tokens on something like this if you have no experience buying clothing online and especially with this brand. If anything, find something on Amazon that you've actually tried on in a store.

Also FWIW- just because it's 100% cashmere doesn't mean it's good cashmere.

(fyi size 50 euro is apx. a size 40 us)

I'm by no means an expert but I thought 50euro was closer to a 39? Anyway, I wouldn't purchase a coat from Theory. Its more of a fashion forward brand and its quality is questionable. I would go into a couple of stores and try on some coats you like, then hit Amazon (if this is where your heart is set on purchasing) and look for the same or similar coat. I wouldn't buy anything without trying on something similar unless I already knew my measurements.

This is a very real concern, especially if brand is not well known. Better to stick to wool or a blend featuring only a small amount of cashmere.

don't do it!

If your style is a mix of having no style, ax murder, and/or made in china swag go for it. Otherwise, trust your instincts and pass.

Maybe sell those Amazon cards?

Not a fan of poly/wool blends.

I'm trying to go through Amazon.

It's not much more then $100. You're buying a disposable item at that price. Do you like it? Does it fit you well? At the price points you're looking at it's not likely you'll be handing the stuff down to your grandkids.

You aren't seeing your real problem.

Sounds like you intend to wear the coat with only a sweater.

You haven't mentioned how you want it to fit.

Most overcoats are sized to be worn with a jacket or a bulky sweater underneath.

Some are sized smaller.

Unless you know the brand and model I've no idea how you can tell any of this online.

Don't: stick to a shop for something like this of which you have no buying experience.

Firstly: Converting EU sizes into US sizes is everything but a precise science. In the US I usually was a 42 (at least with BB, Ralph Lauren and Paul Stuart) after moving to Europe I figured that I am a 50 with some brands (e.g. Canali) and a 52 with others. What does this mean for you? Do not buy European sizes online hoping that some conversion tables are true - You will be disappointed.

Secondly: You are unlikely to get a good fit by buying clothes online without having them tried before. Each manufacturer has its specific fit and just by knowing you standard size does not help (e.g. if a Ralph Lauren Purple Label suit in a 38 fits you great, a Ralph Lauren Black Label in 38 suit may still look terrible on you). Also, I'd be careful with spending lots of money on a product of an unknown producer. Save your vouchers for something else.
