So to bump with this with some news, and of course, another question!

I was offered a summer for job at the law firm I interviewed at during January.  I'm not exactly sure what I'll be doing there, but the first is a medium sized NJ law firm with 30-50 attorney.  I'm wondering what I should buy to wear to work everyday.

Since I'm an undergraduate "intern" (for lack of better words) I'm assuming they arent going to expect (or want) me to wear a power suit and tie everyday.  I have a great tan chino material suit, a very light grey cotton suit, a navy, and a charcoal suit.  I'm thinking about trying to limit my choices to only the two "summer suits, the chino and cotton ones, and I'm going to buy a wool-linen blend navy blazer from suitsupply.  What do you all think of those choice? I also have chino pants in khaki and british khaki, as well as in white and navy.

This is a link to the blazer, and a picture:

Where's the firm, and what is the dress code?  You should dress like everyone else does.

Summer associates are expected to dress like lawyers.  Same goes for college interns at the firm where I worked.

Congratulations on nailing that internship, but see the bold sentences above. I had an internship at a firm as an undergraduate and I was expected to dress like everyone else. This meant; suit, tie, dress shoes, etc., and on Friday, "dress down day," I was still expected to wear a blazer, shirt, tie, and dress slacks.

It can't hurt to ask someone about the dress code...

Thanks for the quick response.  I'm interning at a firm in Red Bank, NJ.

Also, maybe some of the lawyers here can give me some insight as to the typical work-week.  Typically, in most industries it is generally understand that Friday is a slightly more casual day (depending on the firm obviously) but can anyone tell me what the other days are considered?  Is there one specific day in the legal industry that is when the attorneys wear they best clothes?  I in some industries, such as the insurance world, the majority of the deals are signed on Wednesday's therefor, most of the people dress the best on that day.  Is there anything like that in the legal world?

Finally, I've always been opposed to wearing black suits unless I'm going to a funeral or an evening event, but I have two really nice black suits (one is a plain black suit and the other is a black on black pin stripe).  How could I incorporate the black on black pin stipe suit into my daily dress rotation?  Thanks a lot everyone.

There's no day of the week on which people wear their best clothes.  Obviously, you'd be more careful if you are meeting with clients, have a big meeting, or going to court.  Those events don't always fall on a particular day--it will be unpredictable.  That doesn't mean wearing loud clothes, but wearing particularly sober clothes.

Some places are slightly more casual on Fridays, others aren't noticeably moreso.  Weekends are usually more casual.

All of this is highly firm-specific.  When you start, you should wear conservative clothing and adhere to the dress code.  Ask the recruitment department what the dress code is.  Then, feel it out when you're there to get a sense of what's appropriate.

I wouldn't wear black suits to work, ever.  Save them for nights out.  I've heard of some litigators wearing black suits to court, but that won't be you . . .

You're far too young to be making this sort of pronouncement. It just comes off as a bit odd. Ask someone at the firm what you're expected to wear, and then wear it.

I've been buying quality suits from a menswear specialty store since I was 10 years old.  I've always hated black suits.  Even at the age of 13 when I was shopping for my bar mitzvah suit I told our sales person (hes the second generation owner of the store, and I'm the 3rd generation in my family buying suits there) that I would not wear a black suit to my bar mitzvah.  I don't mean to sound odd.

I am sure OP will do fine without a black suit, as long as doing his intern properly and showing keenness, that should be fine and people should respect you for that.

I believed you got to wear very sober clothes for courts, but for office dress what you are comfortable with, if you are comfortable, people in the office will be comfortable.

Well done on your internship and that suit was great in my eye, certainly one of your best fit

I thought the shoulders were too big.. It can either be because they are too padded or because the suit itself is too big.
Your head abnormally sticks out of there like some kind of bad photoshop manipulation.

This is a bumped thread - the only comment can be that you should prepare in better time. Asking a question the day before leaves no time to make any real changes.

Indeed observe what others do and follow.

The black suits can be worn for work purposes.

That, and the fact that he owns 2 black suits, despite his long term bias... smile.gif
