Robe Tailoring and Fit

What's the proper fit for a robe?

I received a robe as a gift in a size medium. The shoulders seem to hit at the right spot, but overall it seems large. How much should the halves overlap? I think too much excess fabric makes it a little uncomfortable. Can the robe be tailored?

For a proper fit, you should be able to fit a playmate under each arm.

When I read the title of this thread I expected it to be an Iroh/Reevolving thread.

Do you plan on wearing the robe with a shirt and tie/for house events? Or are you asking how it should fit when you get out of the shower?

Shawl collar? Silk? Is the belt long enough to tie into a proper bow?

This is taking things to extremes beyond reasonable!

Does it matter?

You probably want to get it tailored to add a tartan pattern.
I would suggest something with some reds in it, like this.

Wool with shawl collar. Belt is long enough.

Yes, because there's too much material I think.

I've never quite understood the purpose of a robe.

I shower and dress if going somewhere and walk around in boxers otherwise. If I go to get the paper, I put on a pair of sweats.

What is the purpose of a robe?

Because wearing a robe is warmer than just wearing pyjamas, when shopping at the supermarket, picking the kids up from school or for when your planet is demolished by a Vogon Constructor Fleet.

I don't understand what the big deal is... I don't want excess material laying around and I want it to hug me when I tie it closed.

I'm sure a tailor can handle this easily as the amount of craftsmanship in a robe (IME) is far less complicated/intricate than tailored items. I imagine if I were ever to own a formal robe it would look/fit like Gene Wilder's robe in Young Frankenstein.
