Thank you so much everyone!  This has been a tremendous help and luckily it looks like it has been a $30 lesson instead of a $200 lesson. Im sure I will have many more lessons on my journey.  I will look for a burnished blutcher and maybe a loafer.

Three days is way too little time to browse SF ...... Spend a few months and built your knowledge. The wardrobe will sort itself out automatically.

Regards.

How much weight do you plan to lose? Your shoe size will likely change too.

The only three dress shoes you need:
AE Park Avenue in Black
AE Fifth Avenue in Brown
AE Strand in Walnut

Not necessarily. Unless there's fat on his feet (which I believe would be weird) his shoe size shouldn't change...

about 75 lbs. I have been a 9.5 for a while.  My wife said I have skinny feet and the fat is located between my nose and my knees lol.

I was itching to buy shoes and I didnt want to mail order park aves... nor pay full price so I bought three used pair of Allen Edmonds from eBay.  I am hoping with some TLC they will be as good if not better than another couple pairs of cheapies from the local box store. I figured these can hold me over and give me a good rotation untill I can figure out what I want and find good deals.

I would like SF members feedback.. did I get good, buys bad buys, and what about the styles I picked,  are they fakes?  Basiclly i just bought the cheapest shoes on ebay in my size (I hope they fit) I only tried the park ave in the stor

. Any suggestions in what I can do to restore them i.e. re sole with leather etc (is it worth it) would be appreciated.  I didnt realize the one pair had rubber soles untill i already bought them (i am a bit impulsive).

First of all, welcome to the forum. The Buying and Selling forum here is a much better value than eBay, and way better guarantee of authenticity, so that would be a good place to start. Secondly, I can empathize with the impulsiveness, but that "unbelievable deal" will come around again most of the time :-)

The first pair of shoes I think is not worth it, because the heels are heavily worn on one side (second last pic). In general beware of buying shoes where there are no pictures of its soles. The second one seems to be in much better shape, but it's a blucher and a lot of people on the forum will tell you your first couple of pairs need to be balmorals, but it sounds like you're using them in informal settings. The third one is called abicycle toe and is also a blucher.

There's a ton of stuff to learn and youre in the right place to do it :-) There's a thread called Mr. Moo's shoe care thread which has a ton of info to clean up and take care of your shoes.

For future reference you can get new AEs for around 170.00 shipped, but you need to wait for sales. Nordstrom Rack has tons of them for around 200.00 and AE themselves have a seconds store that is supposed to be pretty good.
Good luck!

Quoted for truth.

The black's going to work for suits and if you ever need a dressier pair of shoes.

The brown will work for business casual.

The walnut Strand is going to work for business casual and jeans.

If you had to get only 3 pairs of shoes, those would be the pair you'd get.

Color of clothing doesn't matter? Black shoes for all suits? tinfoil.gif

I figure if you only afford 3 pairs of shoes, you probably aren't in a job where you're required to wear suits every day. As such, the black would work for those occasions where you need to, and since you don't wear them very often, you'd probably only have two, in a couple shades of grey.

I didn't say you only need 3 pairs of shoes, I'm saying if you could only have, or rather afford 3 pairs, those would be it.

dude, why would you make a statement like this? shog[1].gif

Okay sorry, it's just that most of the people I know that wear suits do very well for themselves. But of course that's just my experience, so sorry if the statement offends anyone.

FWIW used dress shoes are great value. However, used Allen Edmonds and Alden are terrible value.
Almost all used AEs sell for more than 50 and Aldens can go for 75% of new value. Better made vintage Nettletons, Florsheim, J&M, Cole Haan,... rarely go for as much as AEs do.
NOS(New Old Stock) Florsheim Longwings in Black and Brown always pop up on Ebay for around $100-$150. Look out for those first.
