I think if your son is going to own one watch, a black dialed sports/dress watch is the way to go. Stowa and Hamilton are decent options, but I would suggest looking at seiko (wide variety in different price ranges) and sinn. I've owned a sinn watch in the past and it was terrific. They make very high quality watches.

I second Sinn, but they are a tad pricier.  A little less expensive would be Frederique Constant.  He makes watches that are similar in style to a patek Calatrava (although not in the same league, of course)

The Hamilton is a fine choice, though in that style I would've gone with a light dial.
