I hope the Scotch threads live forever.

Having said that, from time to time a man drinks bourbon.

Since weaning off the Canadian whiskey blends, I've opted for the old standards, Jim and Jack. Many here among might go for Maker's Mark, which I haven't tried. Ditto for the well-marketed Woodford's.

What say ye? Americans stand up for your drink.

I am a big fan of makers mark, and woodford reserve. nothing like a shot of good bourbon and a artisanal beer.

One of my favorite topics. I drink bourbon all the time, and greatly prefer it to scotch.

I love Maker's. It's an incredibly approachable bourbon and available just about everywhere. This is my "go to" before dinner drink when dining out, especially in the winter months.

I'm not as fond of Woodford. I find it to be smokier than Maker's, but without much depth of flavor.

Two other relatively inexpensive bourbons which are quite good are Eagle Rare 10 yo and Buffalo Trace. Knob Creek is also good, but has a bit of a harsher flavor/finish.

For more expensive, try AH Hirsch (which I initially thought was overpriced for what it was, but which has really grown on me), Blantons (incredibly smooth), Pappy Van Winkle 15 yo (just got this for Xmas - it's just great), or Booker's (watch this one - very "hot" at around 125-130 proof).

I'm still longing to try Wild Turkey Rare Breed and Pappy Van Winkle 20 yo.

Of course, at around $22/bottle I can find out myself, but just wondering.

Knob Creek is the bomb. Bourbon over Scotch any day.

I don't have the proper terminology to describe - but it is smooth, sweet, has a very "bourbony" flavor -maybe corny..... excellent aftertaste.

It's very smooth, and leans toward the sweet side rather than the smoky. My understanding is that this is due to the fact that it is a wheated bourbon (i.e. it's secondary component after corn is wheat, rather than rye). As a result, it is a good bourbon to try for someone just getting into bourbon drinking (particularly one who hasn't tried a lot of single malt scotch or has tried them and has found them too smoky or dry). It was one of the first bourbons that I drank with any regularity, and I still find myself going back to it all the time. Good caramel and vanilla notes.

My dad went through a bottle of Wild Turkey while he was out for Christmas. We all thanked him for the reserve. But yeah, I prefer bourbon to Scotch also; Maker's Mark, mostly. Tom

That's what I'm looking for. I do like the caramel/vanilla notes.

I do like the Woodford Reserve.
However, I usually buy Old Fitzgerald 86.
Prefer that to Makers.
Very Old Barton is another pretty good one that goes down easy for me.

The first bottle of Woodford Reserve that were distilled at that distillery were released for sale about six months ago. Before that it was bottled from selected barrels distilled to be Old Forrester.

Maker's is the first ticket for you, then (and it can easily be had for under $20). Another good candidate in the same price range is Elijah Craig 12 (the EC 18 is more expensive and very sweet, but not as robust). Big steps up from that would be Blanton's (~$45) and A.H. Hirsch 16 (~$65-80). Both are very smooth, but Blanton's is sweeter.

I'm sworn to the Maker's cross, but this past trip in LA I picked up a bottle of Knob Creek for a holiday party. Thoroughly impressed even if it's owned by Beam. Definitely one of the cleaner bourbons I've had as it doesn't carry a distinctive taste like that of Makers or Jack, making it a nice change up for me. I keep hearing good things about Woodford. I'll give it a shot next time.

I love my Scotch, my Irish whiskey, AND my bourbon. I've never understood why people felt like they had to choose between them. Knob Creek for me, though Maker's is lovely. Strangely, despite my love for both Scotch and bourbon, recently I've been drinking Jameson almost exclusively when I go out (the occasional two fingers in the evening at home is a different story). Do we have an Irish whiskey thread? I feel I need education on Irish whiskeys.
