Another watch idea: I have this one that I got off of ebay:

I swapped out the black band for a brown one and like it a lot.

+1

I bought my brother this 42mm hand-wound Parnis for Christmas for $90 shipped and he absolutely loves it. Gets a ton of compliments too. Seems to be made well-enough.

I looked up the tie dimple and that looks like a killer way to up my outfit. I have never heard of doing that before. Thanks.

I do feel lucky as I live in a city with not a lot of people, but most people here work at the couple of large places that pay really well and require people to dress in suits. There is high quality suit stores and shoe stores all over the place. I think the high number of well dressed people helps stock the local thrift stores with quality merchandise.

I haven't seen any nice watches yet, only the cheaper timex ones. Has anyone ever had luck finding these $200 watches used for under $50? Craigslist, ebay, thrift stores? I think I need to spend some time researching before I invest that much in a watch, but once I get one is there a website were I could buy an assortment of bands for a couple of bucks each? I feel like one brown and one black leather band would restrict my style too much. It would be fun to experiment with crazy colors and patterns, but I don't want to pay $10 per failed experiment. I wouldn't care if the bands were poor quality since I could weed out the ones I don't like and then once I find the ones I dig I could go ahead and buy the higher quality versions of them.

Goodwill here has a different color they pick on tuesday each week. Any item with a tag of that color is only $1.49, regardless of it's original price. Even then, the jacket was originally $15 and I would have bought it for that price. Savers (another thrift store) has 25% of everything on mondays. I don't just go there for clothes, but I figured I might as well start to pick some up as long as I was going to the thrift stores twice a week.

Are scarves a good idea to help personalize a shirt, or are they an advanced method? Not for this particular outfit, and I don't mean the wintery ones, but the ones tucked in below the collar. Is there a name for this type of scarf? I really like the look of young stalin and robert downey jr in the new sherlock holmes movie. Might look too dressy with clean, new clothes. Both of stalin and downey seem to be wearing the scarves with beaten, worn clothes, of course that was over 100 years ago.

For colorful, $10 and less watch bands that you can swap often your only option as far as I'm concerned are Nylon NATO bands. Just find a watch with a standard springbar lug and match the NATO band lug width accordingly. Check J Crew & google (tons of watchband websites)

the timexes from target are great and around $35. honestly, i alternate between two of those and an old rolex and i get more compliments on the timexes.

Perhaps you could try http://www.internationalwatchman.com/home.html for very affordable straps (saw it mentioned many times on watch forums).

Looks fantastic. It's obvious you have naturally good eye for coordinating. Keep doing on what you're doing and build a great wardrobe.

Great fit man!

I'd suggest you swap out the buttons on the suit jacket to make it more sportcoat-like, unless you can find the matching pants. Also, get a PS. No, don't get one that matches the color of your tie exactly.

I look forward to seeing more!

I don't know. I am least qualified to disparage looks, but I guess the SF syndrome has rooted in me. That jacket doesn't look like it is meant to be an odd jacket and just looks lazy. Of course, no one in the real world will even look twice for better or worse.

My instinct is to agree with this. I didn't know if it was acceptable or completely out of the question to wear it as a sports coat. There is just about 0 chance I would find matching pants of the same material in my price range, so it's either wear it as a sports coat or don't wear it at all. I am ok with not wearing it at all since it was < $2 and I have no emotional attachment to it. From people's responses it sounds like it might be worth wearing if I replace the buttons (and of course get it tailored), but the last thing I want is for the fact of it not being a true sports coat to be in the back of my mind and affect my confidence.

Maybe the best thing would be for me to replace the buttons and try to be ignorant of the criticisms from SF. Just wear the damn outfit a few times. If I feel good in it then it was meant to be. In the mean time I'll experiment with pocket squares and tie dimples; keep an eye open for a true sports coat or blazer and watches. I saw a brooks brothers blazer just today that was in ok shape for $15, but it wasn't my size.

Well.. unless someone has some totally different advice I think i am good with this thread. I need to lurk around the forums for ideas on how to develop a personal style. The button replacement, pocket square, dimple and watch ideas were wonderful and give me motivation to perfect the details of my future outfits. I love the dedication and helpfulness of this forum.

Regarding that scarf question, I've worn scarves like that. Keeps me warm, too. Just tie a four-in-hand knot with one, but don't complete the knot by tucking it into the fold, instead you just simply tuck it all in. I like wearing them myself.

Orphaned suit jackets are generally not accepted here.
I can say this, b/c I have 2000 posts and 2 years of experience here.

What is the difference besides the buttons on a suit jacket and a blazer/sports jacket? If I change the buttons would you consider it acceptable?
