How many WOOL ties do you have? Opinion on this one as my staple. - Page 2

Me not like them.

If we are including cashmere I have 2-3 wool and 2 cashmere and they are great in the winter. They do seem to act like a strangulation device over the length of the day, but overall they are great.

I've got about a half-dozen all-wool ties and a similar number of wool-silk blend ties. I really like them--great for wear with tweeds and other "country-ish" sport coats. I wear them a lot in cool weather...and I'm a SoCal boy.

I wouldn't get anything under 3 inches, unless it is a 2 3/4 or 2 7/8 inch knit in silk or wool.

You said $25 mint for it.....that is $25 that you don't have to put towards a tie of sensible width.

How wide are your laples that you will be paring the tie with, for the most part?

Personally I only own one wool in solid navy blue, it is 3 inches and from Lands End Canvas. I scored it for $4.00. It works with nearly everything because of the color, and I don't have much outside the 3-3.25 inch lapel width. I would have a look on their site and in their overstocks section before getting anything from JCrew. JCrew has some ok stuff, but Lands End and especially Lands End Canvas is better made, IMO, and more sensible in their widths (lapels and ties). They also have a Nordstrom/Brooks Bros type of return policy, where anything can go back at any time.

The one posted by the OP is a bit dark for my tastes for wool. I have a few and the darkest colors are navy and navy with some grey in it. Most of my wool ties have at least some red or brighter blues since I figure when I am wearing them the weather is grey enough so I need something in my wardrobe to be brighter and since I don't wear bright color shirts or jackets, the tie gets the splash of color.

I wear wool ties when I want to have a bit of fun with colour and texture. For that reason - I don't really like the tie in the OP. grey herringbone just doesn't really do it for me.

In Autumn / Winter I only really wear wool & cashmere ties. In fact - I spend half of the year just longing for the temps to drop a bit so I can bust them out. It makes Winter a little more bearable wink.gif

Speaking of which, where do you suggest sourcing some simple solid wool/cash ties in browns and grays?

I've checked with what I would describe as the usual suspects, but I came up with nothing.  I find a lot of herringbone or other stuff, but no good solids.

That seems awfully dark as grays go frown.gif

One on the left is 76% Silk 24% Wool. The one on the right is a really nice heavyweight suiting fabric, 100% wool.

I hate wool ties... nothing looks shabbier to me

I love wool ties, but I would never go above 3". The fabric is usually a lot heavier so they tie a fairly substantial knot already, and something about the larger size that looks fine with silks looks wrong in heftier wool to me.

I have 4, two standard and two knit. None are even above 2.5 inches.
