Yesterday, I went shopping for a new pea coat. The one I have is very long and was in style 2 years ago, but alas, it is no longer in style. So I went shopping for a new, shorter one. I found the one I wanted, but I noticed something peculiar. Most coats this season come with belts.

At first, this seemed extremely strange and feminine, since I had only seen it on women's coats, but upon some research, I found out it's apparently trending very well this season. And after asking around, I found out there are several ways to wear the belt. You can wear it open, closed, tied, or even tied in the back.

I'm going to be in San Francisco from this Monday to Thursday, and will definitely be trying out some new belt fashions.

So, my question to you fine people is this:

How do you feel about belts on men's jackets?

Let's discuss the idea ITT.

Come on guys. I know you have opinions. Don't be scared.

A full belt is normal on a trench-coat, not sure I'd want a full belt on any other kinds of coat though. A belted back can be nice though. Got any pics of the sort of thing you're thinking of?

This is the coat I bought.

It's in black, and you can see in the third picture (on black) that the coat is belted in the back, which is most likely how I'd wear it.

See, I'd think the same thing. But if it's tied in the back it could look really good I think.

Does anyone have any experience with belts on jackets? How do you prefer to wear them?

Looks like kind of a modified Norfolk jacket? It looks like outerwear to me though.

Kindof, yeah.

To me, it just looks like a short pea coat that perhaps has military influence.

Looks terrible with or without a belt. I find those lapels way too big. There are plenty (read most) of overcoats and jackets without belts. What makes you think they are in style? Even trendy magazines like GQ have not been pushing belted jackets. From where did you form this opinion?

I like this one:

I'm not sure how it's trending, though.

Eek. Well, I don't really know.

I googled "men's jackets with belts" and google returned plenty of online stores selling jackets like these, and plenty of reviews, and plenty of fashion designers are designing them.

So... that's how I formed that opinion, though it's not much of one. What I formed was a speculative observation.

The coat up there ^ is kinda cool, but I think it would take a very specific type of person to pull it off. I never could.

Wait, did most pea-coats this season come wig belts or did you purposely google jackets with belts. Now I'm confused.

That just looks bad. And it's 95% polyester.

Belted coats have come and gone over the years. I wouldn't say they are as widely worn as those without but far from outrageous.

I'm not crazy about a short coat belted however.

I'm kinda new to fashion.

I just bought the coat that I thought was in style right now.

What's wrong with it?
