They look silly in the trailer, but I imagine in realtime they'll look much better. Remember, trolls, orcs, etc. were already 'perfected' in LotR. Minor adjustments for new technology are all that is needed.
Why would they? He's the big reveal.

Dooood, these types of creatures have been perfected for years.

Think of Bilbo and the dwarves' experience with the troll brothers in the book, though. They're basically described as big humanoid type creatures. They eat mutton, make unintentional jokes, and get in family fracases. They're not giant, unthinking blobs of muscle of violence.

I don't think Smaug will show up until the 3rd movie, or at the very earliest, the end of movie #2.

I know, but I am jonesing to see what he's like and didn't know the book was divided into THREE movies. I thought two.

Anyone know when the second and third part are going to be released?

LOTR it was christmas time 3 years in a row.

With three movies, they should have time to write a role for a Hobbit woman. Perhaps, Martin Freeman could rescue her from a tower or something and she could join he and the dwarves for adventures. They would be gruff and first, but soon they would grow to adore her. Bilbo would pretend not to like her at first, but then they would fall in love. I'm thinking Reese Witherspoon might be good.

There were, in the book, the odious Sackville-Baggins one of whom was female though I forget her name.

Or maybe he could have a brief fling with Galadriel. She was really tender toward Frodo. What's the back story there, I wonder.

Because Frodo was the ******* MAN. He got to go to the Undying Lands and that makes an Elf-Queen wet.

The reviews support several of my fears, especially that it was a mistake to stretch the material this far, that it could only lead to lots of filler and over-reliance on effects and action sequences, much like King Kong.

Yeah, I firmly believed that it was a passionate work of art for Jackson for the longest time, and that he would not do anything that could possibly tarnish the series. I thought he wanted to elevate Tolkein's work to a new level. Now I am afraid he was after the money and awards more than anything else. It seems to have turned into a greedy enterprise that will be stretched too thin. I just hope it doesn't implode. I have been "anticipating" this film series since the day I saw The Fellowship of the Ring on opening day, and obviously we didn't even know if they would make The Hobbit back then.

There was now way that turning a single book into three films was going to turn out well. I got and understood Manton's point about them adding in extended material from official canon not found in The Hobbit proper, but nothing about this has felt right to me. If these early reviews hold true, it will be interesting to see how the more fanatical fan-base process it.
