I'm interested to see where they stop in the story.

More details:
-Peter Jackson is directing again
-The film will be split in 2 parts and tell the hobbit and nothing else (originally it was going to be a "Hobbit" and a "bridge" film)
-Howard Shore is back to dazzle with the score for both films again
-Most of the crew has actually returned, and the same vendors are being used for the effects/makeup/artistry
-3D filming
-Reprising roles: Andy Serkis (Gollum), Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Hugo Weaving (Elrond), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Elijah Wood (Frodo),
Couple other key actors: Smaug will be voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, Young Bilbo is Martin Freeman, Beorn is Mikael Persbrandt

Son I am excite.

A piece of background in production:

Anticipation for this movie is about as close to fanboydom excitement as I can get. :bounce2:

God, I'm looking forward to this. The interpretation of The Misty Mountains Cold in the trailer is SICK.

I'm really looking forward to this, trailer looks great!

Correction, Smaug will be voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock in the BBC series), Persbrandt will play Beorn though.

Updated. Sorry about that!

Peter Jackson's been known for some unique cinematography, and his take on 3D is different than what everyone else has currently done. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-57320959-1/peter-jackson-reveals-3d-secrets-behind-hobbit/
The movie is also shot at 5K resolution--more than six times that of 1080p--at 48 frames per second, which means "The Hobbit" could be one of the best-looking 3D films we'll ever see. Well, until Avatar 2 comes out, at least.

This may actually be a 3D movie that doesn't make me gouge my eyes out. I'm still not getting my hopes up over that though.

this will be a collective nerdgasm spanning the globe. given the pedigree of LoTR and the continuity in director/actors/crew i expect nothing less than brilliance.

As somewhat that hasn't read Tolkien, the trailer fails to explain why I should give a **** about watching the film. I suppose it's only meant to give the fans boners.

It's more of a long teaser than a trailer in that regard. I'd expect that the trailers following this one will fill you in better. More importantly than that though, why have you not read any of Tolkien's books?

precisely; for once there's a movie that isn't made for the lowest common denominator.

And it's a raging success. My boner that is. After seeing the trailer of course.

The Lord Of The Rings trilogy is a mega popular and successful franchise that won an Academy award. It doesn't need you to give a **** about it. This is really more of a teaser than anything else, and it's assuming that enough people have seen the series that they don't need to get into specifics.
