I'm officiating my first wedding and need help

Hey There,

 

I'm a dress down type of guy. The only suit I've ever purchased was for my grandfather's funeral a few years ago....haven't worn it since. I wear shorts to work 50% of the year! yay.

 

Anyways, I was asked to officiate a wedding (no, I'm not a full time minister or anything).

 

Let me preface my question with this:

 

1. I'm not sure about the "rules" of what to wear when officiating a wedding. My assumption is to wear a suit.

 

2. I think the answer to my question from you all is going to be "no", but I'm a noob to this kinda stuff and just wanted to check.

 

Here is my Question:

 

Can I wear a grey blazer with black pants, white shirt, black tie, black shoes and belt?

 

One thing to keep in mind.....the wedding is not very formal. The groomsmen are wearing black suits (not tuxes), with a black tie, and white shirt. The girls are wearing different colored dresses (I think)

Talk to the bride and groom about their expectations for the wedding event and dress appropriately even if you have to get a proper suit. It's about them and not you. You will be in full view and be part of pictures that will be around forever. You don't want to draw attention to yourself or stand out but you want to stand apart from the group. From your description, everyone else in the wedding party is in a suit and you will be wearing an odd jacket and black trouser. I suggest a dark blue suit, don't wear black as the wedding party is wearing black.

I officiated my sisters wedding last year. I just asked her what she wanted me to wear. She said that I just need to have some pink but still be different then the groomsmen.

The groomsmen wore terrible JCPenny black suits, white shirt and pink tie. I wore a Navy BBGF suit, Pink FC shirt with white collar / cuffs, a pink / white stripped tie and black AE Park Ave. I made sure to show her before hand and she loved it.

I also officiated it using an iPad. icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif
