Internet shoppers; What's your batting average?

As someone who lives where there is no good shopping locally, I do most my shopping on the marketplace here, through proxies, or online stores. I was wondering what other peoples % of success is? I would say about 30% of the items I end up loving and thinking as a home run, majority go back up on marketplace or returns. My friend has about a similar percent of success; it can sorta be frustrating not being able to try things on. I was wondering what other peoples experiences are? I'm moving to a city next year for sure...

I'd say 30% is about right. I try to make sure e-tailers have a good return policy before ordering. Usually it's 6-10 bucks to return an order, so not a big risk for getting to try something you can't find in your town.

Even in a moderately sized city, it's hard to find the things you're really interested in. For better or worse, the internet has made access to stuff much easier.

I'm at around 50%. Most of the purchases I send back/re-sell are because I wanted to try out a new brand and didn't have any idea about the sizing and/or details. I'm a stickler for getting the measurements if at all possible; I'd say a good portion of my surfing on SF is just to find sizing info.

I'd say 60% love and wear tons. 30% love but can't fit into outfits that often because of design or they seem fragile or whatnot. 10% fail.

Very low in the beginning ... 25%? But with enough trial and error and narrowing down the brands that fit--about 90%.

Same here 90% of my clothing and shoes is bought online I keep about only 30% most returned some my only option marketplace.

Wow, I'm really glad I'm not alone in this. I assumed no one else returned at the level that I do. But yea, only about 30-40% do I end up keeping. There's some pieces I'd like to try and actually avoided because I don't know how the brand is sized and didn't want to just end up returning more...

the stores around here are crap so i've been pretty much buying clothing/shoes online since 2008 it does get expensive in the start all the returns and being lazy in the start not returning adds up quick.

i've learned like other posters in here to ask for exact measurements also researching on said items. its all worth it to me though when i have pieces i bought from the start that i still enjoy and wear today with no regret at all.

My past two orders had very different result. The directly previous one was pretty good, like 80-90% success. The one before that was abysmal, like 20% maybe ... I realized after that order that my tastes had changed incredibly. I expect that from now on I will be happy with most of what I buy.

ask for measurements. if you do i doubt you will be returning all that much unless you shop at places like yoox where the shit you think you buy and actually buy are two entirely different things. but that is the price you pay for being a bottom feeder, which is a totally different subject.

always ask for measurements! dont assume the measurements on the site are always correct.

my strike rate is about 75-80%. I live in NYC, but except for a couple of stores I still prefer shopping online.

30% wear all the time
50% ok but not wearing much
20% resell or return

My average has been getting better because I have become a LOT more meticulous when it comes to sizing. I always email asking for more measurements. If I see something I like the first thing I do is check if anyone on here owns it. If they do I look at the measurements listed in their profile, PM them about what size they got, etc.

I'd say I'm about 95% simply because I usually don't impulse buy from the for sale section here. I buy something I really really like. The last thing was a casual belt that I wear daily.

I used to do horribly because I bought into hyped brands with no aesthetic or other sort of direction. A few things were huge wins that I still wear frequently, but I had to sell off a lot of stuff via B/S, especially impulse buys from Gilt. I've done a lot better this year, since I had a list of wanted items that fit with my desired look, and promptly pounced on them during sale season.

Another thing about living in a city without a fashion scene: it's tough to find a good tailor. I have some things that need hemming or taking-in - a peacoat, some Mabitex trousers, etc. - and based on prior experiences, I don't really trust anyone (here in the suburbs, at least) to follow my directions.
