has anyone done a small caribbean wedding? Recs?

I want to do something really small with a good but not michelin-starred type of dinner (which would be beyond most of the guests) and that is it. No big party or anything. One of the points of doing it there is to limit who comes to the bare essentials. I'd like our rooms to open onto the views of the beach and it would be nice if they had balconies that we could sit on for breakfast in the morning and drinks at night. I need to choose a location that has a mix of accommodations since I will probably get stuck with the bill for some of the people that are coming as well as all the wedding expenses. I don't mind spending for my room, but i don't want to spend $500+/night for guests, or even $300, which for some properties are the only option. I prefer seclusion and don't like big resorts that are really bustling with tourists. I think i'd almost prefer the guests to be at a different hotel so that I don't run in to them after the actual wedding. Yes, I am an anti-social bastard and am still pushing to elope. ;p

I don't know. I've said a lot of things over the years. It's definitely something I've been apprehensive about and I've had nightmares about marrying the wrong woman. Edmorel probably said that marriage was something I wouldn't ever have to worry about so maybe you are remembering that. laugh.gif

Thanks piob (and i'm sure the jokes will commence soon).

FYI, recs don't need to be specific to weddings, but even just hotel properties that might be worth looking at. I've never been to the caribbean so don't really know the differences between the 30 different countries and even more numerous number of islands there. Are some more quiet and less developed than others, etc?

I want some place really nice for the GQwifey and I and a less expensive option for guests. I looked at the Ocean Club (since it's the only place i knew) but that's a little too spendy at over 1000/night. Hotels like the Atlantis are way too big and over-run with tourists to be of interest to me.

For reference, Bora Bora is my ideal island getaway, as much as i have one since i'm not really a beach guy, but it's impractical for both monetary and geographical reasons. It doesn't need to be as secluded as Bora Bora. As long as we can tie the knot without interference from boorish tourists, I will be relatively happy. We're taking our long trip in February and this will most likely just be a long weekend affair a couple months later. I'll have already taken 5 weeks off this year, hence my desire to stay relatively close.

Check into Tulum, Mexico . It's fairly remote, yet easy enough to get to from Cancun, inexpensive, has great scenery but may lack some of the "finer" things you're looking for as well. Just throwing it out there as an option.

Don't do Aruba.

Bahamas are meh.

Out of curiosity, why do you dislike aruba and bahamas? I don't know anything about either place.

Aruba was incredibly "touristy" and basically exactly like America where the bulk of the hotels are. There are some smaller cute places outside, but they're very small and the amenities aren't lux.

The Bahamas also felt pretty much the same...but less expensive.

I think you'd like some islands that have a strong european influence. I can't remember where I was but one had a Dutch side and a French side.

To be honest, I think you should spend the money you want on yourself. Make sure your best friend is there, and everyone else can fly their own asses there. Have a party in Toronto or wherever you live afterwards. It's your fucking wedding, stop worrying about the happiness of other people (who from previous posts have not always necessarily considered yours.)

Have it in Bora Bora. Then you can invite everyone to a dinner in whatever city works for you in Canada.

St. Maarten (Martin). Not cheap.

This is also a very reasonable post. I hope you consider it, GQ. However, there is always the other half who will have opinions and feelings which weigh on this as well.

You must be thinking of st-martin/st-maarten. I'll look at them. Thanks.

As for picking up the tab for other people, my GF's parents have no money and my mother has no money and my brother has no money. For that reason I'd strongly prefer to elope and exclude everyone but she's being a good sport in agreeing to keep it this small so we'll see what happens. Maybe I can work on her some more but I don't want to be too forceful and have her be unhappy/stressed/pressured about it either.
