Engagement party next month, what should I wear?

I am attending an engagement party during the last week of January and cannot decide whether to wear a black Zegna jacket and dark jeans, or a steel blue suit and white shirt. The party is 7-10 p.m. The other option is a slim black suit, white shirt, no tie,. or black suit, bluegray print shirt, slim black knit tie. The bride is a doctor and the groom is in a touring band so I expect I wide spectrum of styles.

For winter parties, I typically get by with the old blue blazer and gray pants, but I am trying to get away from that look, which bores the heck out of me, and will annoy the folks in the band. On the other hand, I don't think jeans are 100% appropriate.

Because half the people there will be from the medical field, and management, I want to look sharp and at the same time wear something stylish and less conventional.

Thanks in advance for a sincere response.

Jeans and a jacket assuming that no stipulation n dress has been made by the hosts.

It sounds as if it is an informal relaxed affair so no one should be upset - the statement that some guests are from "management" implies that you are of an inferior species but they too are human and dress down. Achieving that rank does not suddenly lead them to burn the content5s of their wardrobes and start again. The medical profession can be one of the scruffiest known so decent jeans might be good!

The fact that you need to ask is the most worrying aspect of this thread and I am unaware of "sincerity" tests. Appropriate attire for a function should come naturally based upon what you know of the event.

Wear the suit. Add a white linen pocket square.

Thanks...it's the groom's parents house. Band is a group of nicely-attired post-grunge Nirvana types. Food includes full sit down and open bar. Thank you again.

Ok, so I will be going to one...

It's an evening engagement party for my close friend, held at his family's house (probably young children there). There is no explicit dress code, but I want to wear a suit. My other friends will most likely be wearing dress shirts and nice pants. Maybe a couple of people might show up in a suit/jacket, but I really don't think anyone will be wearing jeans.

The current suits up for consideration are Hugo Boss red label, black slim fitting. The other is a very dark charcoal gray Zegna.

I'm thinking about the black suit, white shirt with semi-spread collar, and a solid silver tie. It looks good; clean and simple. But the only thing I'm worried about is looking too formal. This is basically wedding attire itself.

I feel like the charcoal is too dark, and it is a little bit heavier. The other dress shirts I have are business formal (whites, blues, pinstripes) and going out shirts (which are a little more bold). So I'm drawing a blank. I tried a light blue shirt with the black suit/silver tie combo, but it didn't look as sharp as the white.

Go with the Boss red label slim suit and a white shirt, no tie. Leave thr first two buttons undone. Relax and you'll look sharp but not stuff... a tie seems way too formal.

Agree - leave out the silver tie & you're all set!

Definitely a suit.

In the summer a light one, in the winter a dark one. Best option I think is a blue suit. Fits for everything.

check out this website I found when I was lookin what i should wear. They have pictures and all.
