I didn't see a specific thread for this, so why not? What books do you guys really enjoy? Right now I only have an Araki photography book (Tokyo Lucky Hole) and Raf Simons Redux, which are pretty interesting, but I want some books about paintings.

I'm looking for a nice big book on abstract expressionism, with big glossy pictures. Anyone have any recommendations?

I try to stay away from buying specific books unless there is some reason I feel I really need it for my collection. The way I collect is to define what core subjects I want my books to focus on and then when I see something that related to the subject on sale or used, I buy it. I've been doing this for the last few years and have a good collection of several hundred books focusing mostly on abstract painting, asian furniture and art, and ceramics and the whole thing has probably cost me less than 15-20 full priced coffee table books would have.

Throwing a chunky copy of "Andy Warhol: Portraits" on your coffee table (unless you really like Warhol, for some reason) like every other hipster drone says nothing about your tastes or your interests. Focus on what you like and buy that aggressively.

Well I guess this was pretty vague thread, I have the habit of trying to buy the "best" version of things whenever possible, even if it's completely subjective. Maybe I need something that provides a good overview of art history, so I can find what I like best and research further.

Hopefully you don't think Im amassing books to impress people, I don't even own a coffee table. laugh.gif

I'll take your word for it, don't worry.

I think coffee table books often have fairly high production values so buying the "best" of something isn't necessarily as straightforward as going out and buying the "best" pair of shoes. Which is why i think it's a good idea to narrow down your tastes as much as possible and buy in that range. If, however, you just want to buy books that you find pretty, this is a perfectly acceptable endeavor as well and will make for a nice collection I'm sure.

if you're looking for a really cool design book i would recommend this pantone century in colour. I bought one and it's so dope.
