If you are looking for a jean that is made from what is probably the rarest and most expensive denim fabric in the
world... this is it!

WHY ARE THESE JEANS SO SPECIAL? (...AND PRICEY!)

These jeans are amazing because of the rare and exceptionally expensive denim fabric that is used to make them.
This particular type of Japanese selvedge denim has been dyed using a highly coveted and extraordinary dyeing
method called Hank-Dyeing.

WHAT IS HANK-DYEING?

Hank-dyeing is a traditional Japanese method of dyeing yarns, and is done in the famous Tokushima Prefecture on
the island of Shikoku in Japan. The yarns are dyed by hand by a single skilled Japanese artisan. Only a handful of
craftsmen are trained in this technique, which has been passed down from generation to generation for hundreds
of years.

The warp yarns are gathered together in a bunch (called the Hank) and then repeatedly dipped by hand into a
bath of natural indigo liquid, until the dye has penetrated the core of the yarns. Because the process is fully done
by hand, every yard of the fabric is a unique piece of art.

Natural indigo is a very special and rare dye that is created from the leaves of the indigo plant. Most indigo
plants are grown in India, but the traditional hank-dye method only allows for the use of natural indigo grown on
Japanese soil. This fact makes the fabric even more rare because very little indigo is grown in Japan each year.

Natural indigo dye is one of the oldest dyestuffs in existence and has been produced in Tokushima since the Edo
period starting in 1603 AD. Due to the lengthy fermentation process it takes about one year to produce a new lot
of natural indigo dye!

The traditional hank-dye process is so much a part of Japanese culture and history, that their government has
decreed it the prestigious title of:

“TOKUSHIMA PREFECTURE INTANGIBLE CULTURAL TREASURE”

徳島県無形文化財指定

WHAT ELSE?

After the warp yarns are hand dyed in natural indigo, they are sent to be woven together with the weft yarns on
vintage shuttle looms. These old machines, which create a self edged denim fabric, were originally patented in the
1920’s.

LIMITED EDITION

Very little of this fabric is produced each year in Japan, and so our production is also quite limited. Only 37 pairs
of this style were made: 23 pairs for the US market and 14 pairs for the Canadian market. Each jean is hand
signed and numbered. All 37 jeans are proudly cut, made and sewn in Canada by hand.

WHY IS NAKED & FAMOUS DENIM SELLING EXPENSIVE JEANS? ISN’T THAT CONTRARY TO THEIR CONCEPT?

We like to make fun of brands that sell overpriced jeans. Expensive jeans are ok, as long as they are rare, valuable
and exceptional and there is no fake value built into the price. We think it’s ridiculous that people pay a premium
for brands that sell jeans for $200 and up, solely because they have a celebrity designer or even just celebrity
affiliations. Our hank-dyed Japanese selvedge denim jeans are pricey, not because of a designer ego, not because
of celebrity associations, not because we are using diamond studded buttons, but only because we are using one
of the most expensive and rare denim fabrics in the world.
