I might try that some day, but I doubt I'll ever find it as enjoyable since you dont have very much freedom in how you fight, and what you fight against is usually the same. In the LARP I play we have archers, javelins, flails, spears, armor, and we can also shield bash, tackle, kick people's shields, and grapple. Fencing cant compare to that kind of experience.There is no respectable sport that offers all of that.

I know we look ridiculous, but I cant see how it's fundamentally different from airsoft or civil war reenactments.

A lot of early-mid teens didn't go to the national events where all of the drugs, alcohol and sex was. Simply showing up at the local park for regular practice in broad daylight is relatively safe, even if you are around a bunch of weirdos. I went to national events and my knight's house so much because I was mature for my age, and because of that my parents had a lot of trust in me to not do anything stupid, and I didn't. I was offered drugs by a few, and alcohol by nearly everyone and always refused.

As for the victims in the story. I've done some emailing to people that I knew at the time, and I'm very sure that victim who was 6 years old when the abuse started was my friend. Her mother(single mother) joined the group and became friends with Lotek. Lotek and his wife would often babysit the girl, and the abuse happened then. At the time, the girl did not tell anyone about the extent of her abuse, but wrote in her diary about some inappropriate questions that the abuser had asked her. When the mother went snooping in her diary and read it, she immediately left the group and broke off all contact with everyone from it. The 6 year old only told the extent of the abuse when she was a late teen, or in her early 20s.

I don't want to ask her about it directly. I'm sure she must feel a lot of guilt knowing that he went on to abuse others.
