want to get a christmas gift for one of the bosses...
i have been told that he enjoys scotch so i was thinking of getting him a bottle of something
i don't want to spend too much ... and i don't know jack about scotch

what are some of the "better" scotch brands?
can i get a decent bottle for about $50?

If he enjoys scotch and you don't know what he drinks, you are better off not buying it for him.

+1, 50 bucks isn't gonna get you into anything great if you don't really know the guy closely, so what I'd suggest is that you get him some Riedel small digestif glasses for drinking whisky from. They're quite nice and you might be able to get a pair for $50.

type 1998, 1987, or 2002 would all be enjoyable to drink whisky from, especially 2002 or 1998 in that order; http://www.riedel.com/index.php?article_id=103&clang=0

You can get a Laphroaig 10 year or quarter cask for under $50. Laphroaig is my favorite single malt. BUT it is very peaty and briny, so usually not something I'd give unless you know if he likes that style of scotch.

cool thanks
someone else mentioned laphroaig
i will see if i can find it

i don't want to get him the glasses ... he's a bachelor and i don't know what his living space is like... or whether he cares for nice drinking glasses at home
i know that he likes to go out
if i can get a decent scotch for $50-$60ish, i will call it a day

Romeo, K romeo - in America a decent bottle of single malt starts around $40-45 plus tax, and you can't be sure if he's a novice or experienced and will like or dislike a bottle. You don't even need to sell a decently cultured person on a boxed set of Riedels, even a pair- at worst they will sit in the box until the owner can appreciate them, or they'll be a $50 pair of glasses broken at a rich guy's bro party once filled with Johnny black and ice, whatever. If it's the guy whose Maserati you were driving around, I'd say get the $50 glassware instead of the $50 bottle of whisky - I know which one I'd rather have, and which one people would buy for themselves first.

I agree. As someone who has received a $50 bottle of scotch that I didn't much care for, I can tell you that the glasses will be a much more thoughtful and less presumptuous gift.

If you're hellbent on getting him a bottle of scotch, at least find out which region he prefers.
